Stormcrow's Hobby Farm

What are you going to get?

There are days I could get bambi with a handgun... they come within 10-20 feet of the house and munch on the ivy. 😬
Probably a Savage Axis chambered in .308. Will drop anything in Florida, and since 200 yards is longer than any sight line available to me, I'm not worried about the .308's bullet drop comparred to smaller, faster rounds like the 6.5 Creedmoor. But I'm open to influence on that. The Creedmoor has much less recoil, which is, honestly, a consideration. I'm just concerned about the overall bullet dimensions - worried that it is so small and light it will overpenetrate and fail to deliver all that energy to target - particularly inside 100 yards. Also considering a .270, but the .270 has recoil similar to a .308, at which point, may as well just get the .308, since a 1 ft pd difference in recoil is about the only thing the .270 has over the ,308 at the ranges I'll be dealing with.

I've never really thought about getting a rifle. I'm strongly left eye dominant (but right handed), and yeah, they make left handed rifles. I'm definitely a "test drive" before I buy person when it comes to guns, and I don't know anyone who has a left handed rifle.

They make them. Not all that uncommon anymore. I've already been down to shoulder a couple up and peer thru the scope. My eyes are why I prefer handgun. I have a beast of a time with a scope, always have. But the handgun I have isn't suitable for consistently dropping goat, and a more appropriate choice (S$W 686 chambered in .357 with a 6" barrel) is almost twice the price of an entry level hunting rifle.

6" S&W 686 .357 was my second handgun. Very nice gun. I can't think of what I paid for it... probably $450...? 24 years ago... gah. Time flies.

What do you use on your goats when you harvest them?

That is why I haven't harvested recently. I took my first with weapon I wouldn't use for self defense, and very good shot placement. The most recent, I couldn't get close enough for that placement, and had the bullet litteraly deform on the skull without penetrating - difference of 1/2" in placement, and some alteration of impact angle.. Took a second shot to finish the job.

So I stopped culling goats until I get something bigger. To do otherwise would not be humane.

and the 686s run $900-950 now, new.

Isosceles stance, for me, all the way. I'm glad Bullseye Pistol competition is one handed; it was easier to teach my left hand to shoot than to try to sight with my right eye. I used an occluder when I shot matches to block my right eye so that I didn't squint.
Same here too.
Cross dominance... it's the next step up on the evolutionary ladder. Said a friend of mine. :)

Nearsighted in one one, farsighted in the other. It's an annoyance.
Yeah, I can imagine.
And yes, we are getting ugly weather right now. No power since 4 am or so. 3 1/2" of rain. Just dropped the tornado watch. Next llne of storms should pass thru over the coming two hours.
3 1/2" of rain. Ick. Is it going to wreck your driveway (again)? Stay safe!
