Stormcrow's Hobby Farm

FIL has a huge oak on his wood working shop. There is also a large freezer full of food in there. He said shop is probably a total loss. Insured but still a pain. Lots of tool, saws etc.
Oh, man. I am so sorry to hear that. Tools are like friends. You get to know their quirks and how they work best.

Pretty bad. It was 24x30. Saws and tables are set along the wall the tree is laying on.
FIL is a very spry 85 yr old. MIL is 80 and just got out of the hospital. She is having heart rhythm issues. Both are very upset. Doing what we can.

I'm impressressed by the build - looks like it needs a stick removed and new rafters on one side, then a reroof. My barn is minimally framed, the wall would be flat and the rest of it leaning had that fallen on mine.

It is around 40 years old. Concrete slab, 2x4 walls on 16 inch centers. 8 or 10 inch roof trusses. It was built mostly by FIL and 2 teenage sons. So yeah well built.

The back wall is almost completely gone. If the insurance company deems 35-40% damage, they will total it. Salvage is his. This could be best for him financially. He could take the funds and repair or rebuild. Then is possible to re-insure.

Similar thing happened with us after Hurricane Floyd in 1999. Total loss sounds bad but sometimes faster and more $$$ for repair.

Crazy world!

It is, indeed, a crazy world - and with labor costs being what they are, I'm not surprised they would total. His next shop should have foam-core walls and a mini split for AC/Heat - he's earned that luxury.

Oh, man. I am so, so sorry. That was an incredible workshop.

I hope the inurance company does well by him. Stormcrow's right. Your dad has earned every bit of comfort that can be put in a workshop.

I bet he has made some wonderful, beautiful things there.
He used to build furniture, cabinets, lawn/porch decorations. I did the finishing and decorative painting. We were a team for quite a while. We did some festivals, craft shows, private orders. Made a few $$$.
Now he just enjoys messing around when he feels like it. Papa's playhouse.
There is/was an old heater in there.

Hopefully the adjuster will come this morning. A crew will remove the tree.
Then we'll go from there.
