Straight run bantam numbers?

You need to take a course on probability and statistics. I'm serious, it could help you understand that it's just odds and how to figure those odds. I've had 7 pullets out of 7 straight run before. The odds of getting zero cockerels in seven straight run chicks is 1 in 124. That means if 124 people order 7 chicks, 1 will get nothing but cockerels and one will get nothing but pullets according to the odds. That means that 122 people will get at least one pullet. Which one will you be? No one knows.

If you get 2 chicks, 3 out of 4 times you will get at least one pullet. If you get 3 chicks your odds of getting at least one pullet go to 7 out or 8. With four chicks it's 15 out of 16. In a lot of those cases you'll get more than one pullet.

You don't get guarantees with any of this, just odds. How lucky do you feel?

What's the plan for all the males? Chicken nuggets?

And Ridgerunner is right, really impossible to guess (or even suggest) what the magic number would be to get the exact chickens you want from SR. Even if you ordered 3 or 4 of each breed there's always a chance that you won't get a single female of that breed.

I'd love to take a course on probability and statistics, but I don't think that I'm offered one at school, at least not one for my age. That explanation makes sense, but also stresses me out a lot more because I like to be able to plan out every single detail  I'm hoping that we don't go the straight run route, but this has been very helpful with planning for it :)

Rehome, give away for chicken nuggets, and freezer camp. If we do this I'm not allowing myself to get attached to them. No names until they're sexed.

I would not do straight runs if you don’t want cockerels. I impulsively got some straight run bantams a year ago and ended up with 3 cockerels and it was a major headache... they get along at first but once puberty hits it doesn’t last. They fight, you have to separate and build different coops and enclosures and bandage up beat up cockerels - worrying about infection and antibiotics and all that. I know they are cute, but I would spend the extra money on the sexed bantams... it will save you a lot of headaches in the future and probably save you money as well. It’s nearly impossible to sell a bantam cockerel, and you can’t use them for meat. I’m down to one more I need to re-home and then I will never make that mistake again. The cokerels I may have now are RIRs and can easily be processed if need be. But I’m telling you... too many roosters is a nightmare.

I don't really want to do straight run either...I'm presenting it as a potential plan for how to do chickens (my potential plans range from 'just get some normal sexed standards' to 'I could hatch my own eggs') and it's ultimately up to my parents, as beggars can't be choosers. My first plan for straight run would be rehome whatever I could, then rehome to people who would eat it, then cull.

I hear ya. I have the same but generation is flipped.
DAUGHTER :rant :th
I'm struggling to convince that chickens are a GREAT idea, they've already seen that I'll take care of them, I'll pay for the whole thing, I'll build as much chicken coop as I can on my own, but it's still not being accepted.

I like your theory...
So I'm hatching out my first 7 from my Silkie. If I understand you correctly, I'm guessing I'll get maybe
3 or 4 pullets? I'm hopeful for all 7 to be pellets. I bought 4 and got 1 this past spring. :hmm
