I have 6 rhode island reds that are about 3 months now. All but one are hens but Im not sure which is the cockerel yet. The one who looks and acts different is kind of awkward looking and smaller than the others. It's feathers aren't as nice and it's feet are pale yellow instead of yellow-orange. At first I thought it was sick but it seems to be very bold and aggressive and always the first one to eat. Also, it lets me pick it up with ease. None of the others do this. Do you think it may be the cockerel or maybe a runt/sick hen? Thanks for any input!

Did you get them from a hatchery or feed store? If so, they are likely a bit of a mixed breed, often also called "production reds." One mix used is RIR and New Hampshire Red. Of course this will cause some variation as you describe.

I usually make my best gender guesses by stance -- roos are more upright -- or slower feathering in roos. Or, if you're lucky, the little roos will start trying to crow, even as young as a few days. Of course it doesn't sound like a crow before around 12 weeks, but they do stretch their necks out and make a different sort of squawk.

I bought them as heritage breed pre sexed rhode island reds from a small time breeder. They are big and beautiful except for one. Does pale yellow feet mean anything?

It died yesterday. It was eating well and was with active like the others in the flock. I have no idea what happened
