Hi all!
About a week and a half ago, I went to Tractor Supply to get food for my chickens. To my own surprise, I came home with little peepers (oops!)
They are two Barnevelders, and it's my first time with this breed. So far, I'm enjoying every second raising these little boogers.
However, one of them has a strange comb. It looks almost like a Venus fly trap. I currently have 18 chickens, and have raised them straight from the incubator. I've never seen a comb develop this way before.
My guess is that I have a little rooster.

Meet Rambo.

Here is little Clementine for comparison.

I'm not worried or anything; they both appear to be very healthy. Just wanted to know thoughts on baby Rambo's comb?
Thanks!

Well, I'll be damned! Tractor supply tossed many of these chickens together, and I specifically asked if they were the same kind because of how different they looked. They said yes, so I got one light and one dark one. Ha! Thank you!
If its a breed I'm unfamiliar with i whip out my phone and do a quick look at breed standard's, photos of chicks and adults, etc to be sure of what I'm getting. This can also help you find hidden treasures that are mis-binned.
Except in "breeds" that aren't an actual breed (hybrids, etc) at the very least the base characteristics of comb type, skin color, etc should be consistent and plumage/down pattern of those of the same color based breed (ie barred rock vs white rock, silver laced vs gold laced) should be consistent. There are exceptions, of course, and not all breeds are sold as separate color type breeds at the retail level but this is a good starting point or a cue to stop and question/research a minute to be sure of whay you're getting.
