STRICT RULE no pitbulls Period

Pit bulls can be nice dogs. My stepson breeds and raises them. He is forever offering us a free puppy. He's such a nice young man!

BUT I would never get one. Many reasons. The top of my list is homeowner's insurance. It would rise. Dramatically, I imagine. There have been lots of horrible incidents here in Virginia over the past few years.

Listen to your mom. Her house, her rules. She has good reasons. Find another puppy. There are lots of them out there. You'll find one that will make everybody happy. That's very important.

I agree with all the above..especially Mom rules!! However, my dh and I have raised Pits and AmBulls for 38 years..The sweetest dog we have now is a 6yr old red nose pit but she is very animal agressive..I would trust her to a point with people as long as I am there..the most people agressive dog we have is a male AmBull..I would not want him around young people or animals..we have his daughter 18 mo.old..children can crawl on her, handle her, show her and she is not agressive at all..these dogs were raised in the same environment etc..but definitely respond differently..

As an occassional breeder..I will never let a pup go to someone who has never had bulldogs..it is kind of a catch 22 situation..but it is my stand..you need to know the breed..

All this being said..to no point really..I would like to say..my father raised black and tans all my life..they would catch every chicken, cat, rabbit, etc. they came across..it is often the way they are bred and trained but also in the breed!!

I say skip over any 'free' puppies. It just encourages people to breed dogs without any consequences. Get your next dog from the Humane society.

Pit experts correct me, i have never owned a pit, although I do think there pretty!

I would be more worried about the park husky, Pits do need the extra extra socialization since they are tough dogs, as a physical from. They are a dog that has tons of emotion, I think thats might be why there used they way they are (in the bad times).

huskies are runners! high prey drive! and if it run there gonna at least try and get it. I have one I raised since she was six weeks, my poor kitty is now my parents kitty. please have a fence, and maybe two leashes on this one all the time!!!
Also, if not given enough to occupy that energetic mind as well, they will turn that energy on your moms house. They need to run, and run, and play, and run!
oh yes, and the digging, make sure said fence is a foot under ground, or they will get out...
They are also very very hard to potty train! (I do LOVE this breed)

breed can be important, for many different reasons. look up BOTH breeds with your mom or look up breeds, that would work with the family with her. that way you know what breed or mixed breed would suit your living best.

Huskies are also really smart and get bored easy. Some friends of mine got one and DID NOT spend enough time with it. I think it chewed up at least $1000 worth of electronics. It used to like to hide cell phones in the back yard too

The only way I would get another pit is if I don't have any other animals.I agree They are great loyal dogs but if they ever get the taste of blood.......
I know my pit became very jealous when we would give our attention towards another animal.

I do agree with the "skip" over free puppies.

Bad mix. I would object to the husky part - too much unfocused energy with a tendency to run away. A mix like that would not be a kid's dog, anyway. You'd be better off with a smaller mix from the local shelter that would make your mom happy. Do what your mom says.

Thank you everybody for not actually wigging out about pit bulls. I do appreciate it!

unless you can dedicate yourself to properly training a puppy like that which I think would also include some professional training, not just for the dog but also for yourself, I would pass.

The instinct on these types of dogs is amazing. The neighbors have a full Pit and got her as a puppy and while she was sorta socialized, just with people at their house and their dogs she is completely un-trustworthy with other people or dogs. She is untrained as far as obedience and was never taken out of their yard but she is treated like a pet dog and not encouraged to fight or be aggressive in anyway.

They had a 4' fence, we knew at some point she would get out. We just didn't realize that she would get out at the same time our dog was out. We have a 100lb Great Pyr, their dog is about 35lbs. Our dog is never out unless shes with us so we were there but their dog got out one night and came tearing down and dove right into Sydney's(our dog) neck, it was like a lion attack, their dog who has never been used for fighting knew exactly what to do to take down a dog so much bigger then herself. She had her jaws around Sydney's neck and was cutting off her airway, I wasnt sure what to do so I started running and screaming like a maniac right up to them stomping and kicking and luckily it scared the dog enough she let go and ran. My sister was able to grab her collar and restrain her so she couldn't come after Syd anymore. Syndey, in only about 30 seconds had some major puncture wounds and top layers of skin that had been separated from the lower layers and lots of bruising.

We made sure the neighbors put up a higher fence but im not convinced she wont get out again. Sydney is no longer allowed out without a leash and we worry too about our little Yorkie, since one bite and she would be toast.

Thier dog looks and acts super sweet most of the time and very puppy like and I really didnt realize what kind of damage she was capable of.
