Stubborn case of Bumblefoot

I'm taking that course of (in)action with one of my girls. I couldn't get anything out of her foot either. So I'll let if scab over. If there's anything in there, the core will reform and we'll start over. I hope it's done, though. I'm getting tired of this.

My roo, Pickles, had his vet appointment yesterday. The doctor is worried about the amount of infection still in Pickles' foot. He was able to squeeze a lot of gunk out, but thinks it'll be a while yet before he's healed. The infection is deep in his foot. After debriding the wound, the vet packed it with a chloramphenicol pellet, which melts and spreads through wound.

Will continue the Baytril and the silver sulf. cream, but stop the foot soaks for a few days so the chloramphenicol can work its magic.

*fingers crossed*

Interesting, I'd not heard of chloramphenicol pellets before, hope it works. I did look them up and they are pretty pricey, at least the ones I found. Will be watching to see your updates. I'm still plugging away on my roo, one foot is looking promising, the other a bit less. I'm doing something similar, I'm using tricide neo and flushing and filling the wound, a drizzle of manuka honey and then covering with duoderm bandage to seal and hold it in, changing every day. Just soaking didn't seem to be making any progress. It seems to be making progress now so am hopeful. Last cleaning went much quicker and easier and it now looks more like just a wound than an infection, so we'll see. I'm tired of it too, but don't want to give up on him as he's an awesome roo. :idunno

It was $40 for one pellet so I don't think I'll be stocking them in my emergency kit. I am glad, though, my vet decided to try it. Especially if it works. I really need to get this cleared up so I can reintroduce him to his flock before winter. (He lives in a rooster flock so the re-introduction process takes forever.)

The bit about the difference in the treatment response per foot is interesting. I wonder why that is. He must be an awesome rooster to put up with having both his feet cleaned. And good on you for doing it!

Yeah! I took the wrapping off the gal's foot. I haven't messed with it for about a week. It is healed! So thankful! I think the tricide neo was the key. I did so many things but that really helped bring the infection to where I could get two very little nuggets and some puss. And after nearly 3 weeks in working on it, the swelling is down and no sign of infection.

I cleaned out Pickles' foot this morning - first time since the magic pellet. I can't say I saw significant improvement, but I saw enough to try the pellet again. There was certainly less pus than there would have been if I had waited this long to clean it out. The swelling between his toes has lessened.

I'm going to try to squirt the silver sulf. cream into his foot. I've been just packing it into the wound with a q-tip, but it doesn't go in as far as I'd like it to. I may need to thin the cream a tad with some saline so it spreads further in his foot. I'd have to seal the foot with some surgical glue, but I think this could work.

Instead of gluing it shut, try this first:

I cut them to size, so get quite a few per pad, they adhere and seal it up well, but you can remove if needed. I put them on and then wrap with co flex bandaging, they don't adhere completely at first if there is moisture or ointment around the area, but the co flex keeps them in place until they do. They are VERY well adhered when I change them. I'm currently doing it daily, using the tricide neo and manuka, and am making progress, so cautiously optimistic.

It will peel off. They come off with no or little residue, I just peel slowly so I don't pull any tissue around the edges of the wound, it doesn't adhere to the wound itself. They are made for wounds that are exuding, thus working to hold a medication in, and keeps it moist also. I just swab some betadine around the wound (not in it) where the bandage will be laying to make sure the skin is clean. They have a paper/clear plastic backing that you peel off, that side goes down. I had to order mine, maybe you have stores with better selection than mine. Says they can stay on for up to 7 days, the longest I have left one on is about 3 days.
