Stupid Sewer Line! Annual Clog - Waiting for Rooter Man

We have that issue, too, only it's the smell that lets us know as it's kind enough to back up into our crawl space...

We have a plumber here called Day and Night, and they charge a flat rate of $89 no matter the time of day (or night), weekend, etc. I love them dearly.

My neighbor who has the same issue throws a handful of rock salt down his toilet every night before bed this time of year and flushes a few times to get it in the 'right area' (how could you know?) and he hasn't had the problem in a while.

We have had a few yeas where we resorted to the root kill stuff you flush- there's an organic brand of it- and we've gone without a back-up for three years, knock porcelain!!

We have the same problem with tree roots. Once every 2 - 3 years we rent a roto rooter machine. It only costs $25 to rent it from the hardware store. Last weekend it was time again. We had the septic tank pumped the same day, so while the tank was empty we roto rootered from that end too. It's not that hard to do, and it's pretty cheap to rent the machine. Tree roots are the main problem, but soap scum from liquid dishwasher detergent was a big issue this year (it coats the pipes and the tree roots and builds up). There is a chemical that can be flushed down once about every 6 months to slow the tree roots down. It helps, but doesn't solve it entirely.

Good news, found a guy that came out for only $70. He hit the plug at only about 8 feet out but used up all 100 feet of his line to clean out / push everything all the way down to the main line in the street!

We called the local rental place and they said it would be $45 for 4 hour rental. We may do that next time, especially if this guy isn't available because all the others wanted $120 to $145 to come out.
