I just collected 2 eggs from the nesting box and happened to find this tiny and broken egg stuck in a weird spot - maybe a chicken layed it while sitting on the roost and it rolled off the droppings board and into a weird crevice? (My 4 chickens just started laying this month but they've never layed an egg this small and only twice have I found eggs anywhere but in a nesting box - once on the droppings board and once in the middle of the coop). Should I worry? Its broken like maybe someone pecked it - but its not eaten. It was frozen when I found it. Any thoughts would be very appreciated!!!

I have had an egg a little smaller then that, it was laying in the run, i doubt they even realize they are laying an egg, probably think they are just going to the bathroom.

Don't worry!!! The hen did know she laid an egg. It is called clutching. It is the last egg in a wave or series. She will lay normal eggs again. This is very common in aged(3-5 yr) hens. Used to collect them from rare breed bantam hens. Sign the well may be going dry. Sort of like menopause. doesn't happen overnite. FWIW, regards Marcel

Menopause??? My chickens are only 7 months old and only just started laying on the past month!!

They also lay small eggs like that in the beginning of egg laying until they get to a more normal cycle. I've found a few of them like that. Cute aren't they? One of my hens that has been laying for over a year now, was just starting to go into a molt and layed an egg like that. It happens.

LOL...some people call them "fart eggs"..

sometimes, if they have a little debris in the egg organs, the body forms a semi-egg around it..
they usually don't have a yolk..or just a speck of yellow.

and as others have posted..could be at the beginning or end of a cycle, or clutch.

I'm always intrigued when I find them..
