Sumatra Thread!

This is my beautiful blue sumatra!! she's been laying eggs for about a month now!! I think, because she is so rare I should find her a home with a breeding program... any advise out there? ...if she's not breed quality I'll keep her but I have a completely different breed project going on...

she has a great head!! you want your sumatras to have big heads that is a key secret to breeding champion sumatras. she needs to have a fuller tail. but I would keep her and breed her to a rooster that has fuller tail. her chicks will look great.

Yes, that is a great site to use as a reference for Sumatras, long tails and several other breeds. I completely agree, the SOP calls far a short round head. I have had several breeders of very high quality stock help convince me to move my birds even more towards that sleek gamey type head.

I think I saw your ad on craigslist and tried to email you but got no response. We live in Deer Park and breed sumatras. Where did you get her? My coworker came and got a BLR hen from you last week. If you're wanting to find a home for her, I'd love to use her in our flock.

Then how come all the people that I ask about sumatras tell me that a sumatra should have a big head. I have talked to several poultry judges about how the heads should be on a sumatra and they say that they should have big heads. I have even asked Doug Akers about it and he said that they should have big heads too. Doug is a licensed poultry judge and he is the president of the American Sumatra Association. It also says nothing in the standard of perfection that Sumatras should have a small head. but it dose say that they should have a short beak. They also should not look like Game birds. Something to think about.

You are right, it does not say in the SOP that Sumatras should have small heads, it says short round heads. But short round head is also not a big head either. They should have a nice well balanced head, not small but not big either. Short and round and not long. A big head to me is Asseel, Malay, Shamo, Cornish, Brahma, etc. not what is seen on winning Sumatras. Just a clarification, Doug Akers is certainly one of the more knowledgable Sumatra breeders and chicken breeders out there, but unless he just got his APA judging license in the past year he is not listed in the APA judges list. If someone on here knows that he has passed then great because I would love to hire him to come judge one of my next shows I put on.

I will work on getting pics in time. Right now we have a dun rooster, a few black roosters, and lots of black and dun females that we will be breeding from. I haven't gotten any pics lately but we are expecting a group of new birds to come this week from a friend who decided to work on bantams. When they get here, I'll try to get pics of the roosters and hens.
We like ours gamey. Not pit/fighting looking gamey, but more of a wild/feral style gamey, it seems to make them look more regal and elegant

I might be interested in trying out some duns in the future. Please let me know if you have some eggs available in the spring. Thanks!

Some females from breeding pens this summer. I'm excited to see how the chicks turn out for next year. If only I had time to take them to shows

I was able to get several blacks and I ended up with a lot of extra blues and splashes.

At least one of the hens is about 8 years old. From my first trio of sumatras.




Had this male for most of the summer but a coon got him toward the end. I have five males from him though. I'm excited to see what they look like next year.
