Sumatra Thread!

And God thats just the tip. I do less with Sumatra than any of my other breeds. Phoenix , ohiki , and danver. I've built danvers to about 40 colors now. Pretty close on the other 2 also so figured I might as well do up the Sumatra too while I was at it haha

I'm taking the colors from a lot of these too foe the sumatra. A ohiki x phoenix bird seems to be going really well with sumatra type too. And I get a lot of need lobed birds in those to use on Sumatra too. Them I have a lot of fibro melanistic birds too. Been wanting to add that into the Sumatra too just to see the look. All in all I hatch 7000 to 12000 project birds a year on average.

WOW........you must have a super operation/coop to hatch so many
and have room to grow them out to see how they will look once they mature.
I am green with envy just to dream of that much room.....I only have 2 acres
to work on.

He's gorgeous FMP, does he normally have a slightly darker tail than body? Thinking harder on this khaki color. If you breed khaki to khaki what are the resulting offspring colors....dun, black, and khaki or just khaki and dun? What is the offspring color from khaki to dun and khaki to black and khaki to blue? Thanks for any information you can give concerning this color.

Hi all! Saw some beautiful birds looking through some of the recent posts Was wondering if you guys would mind critiquing my 4 month old roo. He's still got a lot to grow but wanted to see if he's growing in the right direction. Excuse his tail; it's been raining a ton down here so it's a bit tattered. If any more pictures are needed please let me know. Thanks!!

Welcome to the board FLCountrygirl. He is a pretty bird and
it will be exciting to see how he turns out. I think you need to
look for hens with deep yellow color on the feet to help with his
light color......is it pink or white? Look for darker eyes too as well
as darker faces to help. I'm sure others here will have better advice
for you. It's hard to tell but it looks like he is laced? You have a nice
bird. I just love the look of sumatras.

butterscotch or a deeper cream color?

The darker feathers on him are the new ones coming in, that is his normal color. Khaki x khaki makes more khaki, they might be lighter though. Khaki x dun makes 50/50 of each color. Khaki x black makes all dun. Khaki x blue makes platinum which we have a few bantam platinum chicks from the khaki rooster crossed to blue hens. The best way to describe platinum to me is almost like the color of a ringneck dove

Normally it is about the color of khaki slacks.

Haha yep got 135 acres to work on. I do keep back most of them unless they are obvious culls from the get go. It does tale a lot though . I generally run threw 200 pounds of feed a day. Got a dozen or so 8 foot long brooders. Then once heat isn't an issue they go into 10x 25 ground pens to grow up. Then on to 25 x 50 finishing pens before they are picked out for breeding pens or given away. Tricky part is keeping up with the genetics in each bird since.many look identically in project phases. That's where tow clipping and a record book has to come in to keep track of them all. If you ever have Amy genetics questions do feel free to.ask. chances are ive done it haha

OMG......you are my hero.......I can't imagine trying to raise up that many birds
and going to work at a day job.......you have to spend a good part of the day
playing with the birds..........but that sounds like a good way to spend the day.

I have not heard about toe clipping......... and I will pick your thoughts on genetics
if you are willing...........some day if I head down your way I'll wave as I pass by
