Sumatra Thread!

The hen below is looking like a good enough hen, She will be used for breeding in 2016.What are your thoughts on her?

The cockerels above and below are brothers to the hens in the first and fourth picture. Which cockerel do you think looks best?
I like the one below because he is darker in the face, but he is living at my dads at the minute. The cockerel above is living with me but I might sell him with a hen.

The hen above is the first Sumatra hen I have owned that has a fanned tail!

Above on the left is a young brown leghorn and on the right is a young Sumatra who hopefully will be a good bird.

Critique the birds above and say what you would breed them too!

Raph, do you not have the sumatra cock you won with a little bit ago? It is ok to take his daughters back to him. Personally I like the head on your dad's cockerel better (per what I remember of your standard) it said no wattles, small comb, and a black face. Your dad's cockerel is not even showing earlobes yet, which with wattles/ comb only get bigger with age and I can clearly see wattles/ ear lobes and a bigger comb on the cockerel you have. I'll have to find the sheet I printed up with your standard on it to tell on the rest of the body and will post back later about that.

By the way can you get a picture of your dad's cockerel with his left wing spread out and one of it folded up again? (it's pictured here but looks odd)

I'll ask my dad to get a picture of the wing for you.

The cockerel who won the show is getting old and his fertility is low, so this coming year(2015) I'm going to hatch a load of chicks from him and two hens. The hens the old cockerel will be breeding with would be aunts to the two cockerels and pullets pictured in my last post
So that will be 2015's breeding for the Sumatra's.

Then in 2016 I will breed 2015's chicks with the two pullets and one of the cockerels pictured in my last post.

I don't know if you can make sense of what I've written, it's complicated. To narrow it down I'm going to breed cousins together and then I'll breed the cousins off-spring back to their grandparents.

What size leg rings would be good for the Sumatra's?
It will make it easier to record breeding if I give each hatch a different colour leg ring!

Makes sense to me. I agree with Ramirezframing......I'd go with your dad's cockerel
unless you get a better one from next years breeding from the old cock.

I have found that most leg bands are sized in the 1/16 of an inch. So a size 9 leg band is 9/16 inch across or diameter. if you have a set of tools find a open end wrench that fits a bit loose on your birds leg, that will be the size you need. I hope that this helps you somewhat.

How old is it? It looks pretty feathered out. my cockerels had their long feathersby that time. Also, the feathertips by the base of the tail appear rounded. unless is it is a very young bird, I'd say"pullet" BUT i am absolutely Not an expert.

]Flyin-Monkey-Dung,

This is probably a stupid question....but, I'll ask anyways ;) Why black to Dunn vs any other Dunn cross? Wouldn't black to Dunn eliminate your chances for any khaki birds? I only ask because a tend to drool a little over khakis.

Thanks!
