Summer 2012 Granny "Square" Swap (sign ups closed)

Sunny-I was surprized to know Kim's swap was your first. You sounded so experienced. That was when I tuned in, too, but was too late to join.
Well thank you! I was so nervous. I kept thinking I was doing it wrong and bugged poor Kim to death with questions. She was so super helpful and supportive though. It was an awesome experience once my nerves settled down.
Good morning~

I tried to start another 12" square last night, but only got a few rounds done on it b/c DD & I were watching the ole classic movie ALIEN. OOoooooo that old movie is still scary in a funny kind of way, so I couldn't concentrate on stitches.

Sunny~ Thanks for the tip! Do you have that link on hand to repost? If not no big deal. I'll scroll through to find it. I haven't had the patience to sit and try a rectangle pattern again just yet.
I was scared to try the 12", but now that I found I pattern I can do I really like them. Since they are so big we will be closer to having enough squares to make an afghan.

Oooh I saw that movie when I was 16 and thought it was sooo scary! *shiver*

Yes I saved the link in my favorites when Kate posted it cause I didn't have time to look at it right then. Here it is...

So instead of 13 chains, to start, you do 25. Then, of course, you would do more groups of double crochets in the middle to lengthen the rectangle but that part comes very natural once you are crocheting it. It may sound confusing but you don't even think about it once you are at that point.
It is a really easy pattern for me to do. Much easier than some of the ones I've chosen to fight through. I use a smaller G hook but I think the proportions should be correct even if you use a bigger hook. I hope so anyway. I love the way these are coming out! I use a jewel color in the middle (as Alethea suggested) then use bone or ivory to surround that, then use Caffe latte on the last row. Even with no embelishments they are a very pretty pattern and they come out so perfectly flat and even! They will look very nice in a finished afghan or other project as filler pieces. :)

All the squares are beautiful! I've been working on other projects but finally found a pattern that I didn't think would be too hard to adapt to a rectangle so tried my hand at it. I like how it came out. I will make a few more of these using different colors. This one is cranberry, cafe latte with a bone border. Going to try the two purples now...

I like it, color blocking gives interest and a calming pattern too.

Sunny~ Oh Thank You ~ Thank You for reposting the rectangle link and giving the direction so it will make the right size. I really, really want to try to make some rectangles for this swap. I can't wait to give them another whirl, but want to do some more 12" first. I can't believe you were nervous about the swap. BTW , you didn't bother me at all. You have always been so knowledgeable. You have been super helpful to me and to others all the time w/ questions over the years on the crochet chat site. Thank you very much! I always appreciate your help & kindness!

Kathy~ I really love your rectangle! It's so unique! I just love the color combo and the pattern! It reminds me of the half & half 6" square pattern that Sunny did for the Fall swap.

No crocheting for me today. We just got home, but I might do a little before bedtime since I don't have a book to read right now.

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

I crocheted a little tonight, enough to mess up royally, but it wasn't on the swap blocks. I am also working on a baby blanket for my niece's boy. Ended up ripping out almost all of what I crocheted and still have no idea what I screwed up.

Oh no!!! I hate when that happens! Well I had a bowl of ice cream instead of crocheting and then took a hot bubble bath which made me too relaxed & tired to crochet. Hopefully tomorrow I can get back to the swaps.

Oh I bet the purples will be so pretty in this pattern. It's funny because I can do the half and half pattern like this but when I tried the tricolor one I got all confused, lol, still not sure what I did wrong but I've never tried it again.

Oh thank you! You are being very kind. I remember what a newb I was regarding swaps back then. haha Trying to get things to measure exactly 6"x 6" was quite a challenge at first. You never deal with that on baby blankets (continuous crochet) and the one sweater I had tried to make back then ending up being very beautiful but also 3 sizes too big for me!

I have been crocheting off and on all day. Trying to make up for a lazy last few days. Well lazy about crocheting. We've been super busy with family stuff instead. What I really wanted to get done (more coop work) didn't happen either.

So how has everone's weekend been?

Kat- Beautiful rectangle

Kassaundra-I always expect to be taking things apart when I start. Somehow, the three steps forward and two steps back does move along.

The weekend was fine, but I've taken to closing the windows in my room and running an air purifier. I didn't expect to look forward to getting back to Berkeley because of smoke. But then, there could be an earthquake. I told this to someone who told me a story about a man who wanted to live in the safest place he could find, no natural distasters. He chose an island in the Pacific... called Iwo Jima.
