Sunflower Chickens

I have found that you can get a natural food at some of the farm stores. I am not sure on Organic I could not find any near me. Here is what I found. This is just game bird they have layer and unmedicated chick starter.

Thanks for the information about Nutrena. Unfortunately it's not organic and does contain soy products which I'd rather stay away from if possible. Thanks though!

- Renee is Chookschick on here, our fearless leader for these threads. I think she has here recipe posted on here, the Ultra Kibble (UK) is at TSC but you have to order it, the one in Lawrence keeps it on hand since Renee got everyone using it

I'm sure I'll be wrong on this but is it not true that its hard for us to really find an Organic feed is cuz it has a short shelf life? I dont know if what Renee makes could be called an Organic but I think we should look into it.
Amy I like to get my feed from Renee cuz I'm suporting a person who whats the best for her birds. I meet a few Organic feed makers at a pultry show last year for our area. Might need to go to one of them?? I know that when the Fair comes to hutch you can find them there, but thats a long time from now.

I lived in Wichita for 10 years, but that was a good number of years ago. I'm afraid I can't be of any help with the food, but I just wanted to say hello and welcome!

Yes, I was very intrigued about her feed. It sounds fantastic and may be just darn close enough to organic for me

I did read on the other thread that folks would go in together and place orders for it. I just might join the club when my chickens are big enough for it.

I need to do a bit of research on the chick starter feed too. Medicated, non-medicated, etc.

Interesting night... or morning to many of you. I got home a little before 4 a.m. Sat down to check email and relax a few minutes before going to bed, as is my normal routine. When I was just about to go to bed, I noticed my rinkydinkubator was running constantly, which is not normal.

When I checked it, the temp was down to 90!

I don't know how long the temp had been down. I had 6 eggs that were due to go into the hatcher, which is a little giant still air incubator. Fortunately, it was fired up and warm because I had 3 marans chicks in there drying off, and a number of other ones that probably won't hatch.

I took the remaining eggs, about 15 marans, and put them in the GQF that I had just fired up in the basement, and was watching to see if I had it regulated right.

SOOOOO.... the rinkydinkubator has seen it's last eggs. I am very disappointed in the thing. It appears my GQF is already holding closer temps than the other one ever did.

I really wasn't ready to start incubating in it. I wanted to replace the back up wafer thermostat, but I guess I will just have to take my chances with the back up until I'm done hatching for this year, or at least for a while.

I've had about a 10% hatch with the rinkydinkubator. I just bought this thing last fall off ebay. I thought it looked like it would work great. I will have to see if I can get some kind of a refund or something. Unfortunately, all my purchase info is on the computer that crashed.

I might possibly be able to get the info off there when some of the replacement parts for my computer arrive.

Would anyone be interested in splitting an order, or even part of an order of show quality LF white wyandottes? I would like to place an order with a master exhibitor from Indiana, but I can't justify getting 25 chicks for myself.

They won't be cheap. He charges $8 per chick, then there would be whatever shipping on top of that which could be split according to the number of chicks bought.

These are out of national champion stock, and would be great if you have kids in 4-H that would like to show chickens.

If anyone is interested, let me know. Send me a pm or an email. I told him I would reply in about a week.

I don't think you can call Chookschicks feed "organic", but it is soy free. I think it is difficult to obtain "organic" ingredients from the local mills.

As to the chick starter, I have always been told it should be medicated for cocciodiosis and I only feed medicated through 16 weeks. I know, however, some do feed non-medicated starter as they don't have a problem with cocciodiosis. Some of the more experienced Kansan folks will certainly chime in here.

Ivywoods....sooo tempting. Boys are in 4H. Just purchased some Wayne Meredith blue wheaten chicks for that purpose. Hmmm...but then I also saw Katy's birds on her egg auctions....You all are a bad influence!

It is so hard, I want so many different breeds of chickens. I am only allowed so many living in town. So I have to get the ones I can then wait some. I hope by next spring to be on a farm.
