Sunflower Chickens

Good morning! Thought I saw the sun...but it is hidden now

Tntblake - congrats on the craigslist find! Was this in response to your "wanted" ad? I need to spend more time on craigslist and less on BYC?

Katy - wishing some rain your way, but from the forecast it looks like we are all going to be dry for the next few days, maybe the weekend?

Schellie69 - sorry I'm no help on the feed side.

We had a surprise from our coop this weekend! One of our cuckoo marans pullets hatched last fall, gave us her first egg! Love getting those first eggs - so small and you know it was a labor of love!

They usually are butchered by the time they are about 8 weeks old and naturally have a very short lifespan.

Am I doing something wrong that they still don't have full feather coverage?
(I am feeding starter ration, as much as they want, and have been raising the light to encourage feathering.)
Is there something else I should do?

They need a higher protein diet then layers like a gamebird feed 22% they are meat birds most of their enegry goes to getting big fast, Most people don't worry about feathers since they butcher between 8-10 weeks of age. good luck.

Yeah. My poor DH is not looking forward to my first meat production experience.

If you buy game bird feed you wont be looking forward to your feed bill either . those meat birds will drain your wallet in no time. I will never buy another meat bird as long as I live.

I don’t think we have that here at our Orscheln's in Ottawa. I wonder if it’s any good. I would try aslo asking about this in the Feeding and water threads and see who has been able to give it a try. Maybe it’s still working its way around the country.
