they shouldn't have been - our regs require them not to be refrigerated before sale, and Tesco are not likely to break such regs wittingly. Regs also require that cartons be stamped with advice to refrigerate them after purchase. These apparently contradictory regs are to avoid condensation forming on eggs that are brought out of a chilly environment and into a warm one, and the condensation compromising the bloom, during packing and transporting to the shop.
By all means have a go at hatching them - it'll be great if some do hatch. As someone else posted there was a news item a week or two ago about 3 out of 6 Clarence Court eggs hatching! A 50% hatch rate should be encouragement to you!

that’s so interesting! I’m from the states originally and eggs are always stored/sold refrigerated over there or they were when I was growing up!

It amazes me how different European eggs are from the US. You'd never find supermarket eggs here labeled with the breed of the chicken. Were these eggs un-refrigerated? Good luck! It would be very cool if you got something from them! How much did these eggs cost? Just curious.

I had read where someone said their local Whole Foods sold fertilized eggs for extra money, but they had been refrigerated of course. I don't live anywhere near a Whole Foods though so I've never witnessed this myself.

I’ve heard that trader joe’s may also sell fertilised eggs if you have one near you!

I just figured, 6 of these eggs cost me as much or less than 1 fertile egg locally or shipped from eBay so why not give it a try?!

Okay after reading the below comment about Trader Joe's, I think it was Trader Joes I had heard about, not Whole Foods! Sorry! There's not a Trader Joe's anywhere near me either!

There was a thread a couple years ago, where someone successfully hatched an egg from Walmart. They were refrigerated. The occasional oops cockerel may evade detection in a big cage-free egg operation.

the two eggs that hatched were over two weeks old prior to incubation!! It was intersting to watch!
