Support Group for Abused Duck Keepers

I trust my dog after the 4-5 week mark
I haven’t given her the chance when smaller to know if she would be good
She probably would as she would lay either outside the duck door or inside the coop when mom was sitting on her eggs
She is in the yard with my birds all day and never had an issue in 2 years of having them
She is older 12 years in July
Husky
She guards them all day
Aww! She looks younger though!

I get told she looks like 1-2 years all the time
I got her in November of 2011 and she was born in July of 2011
She came from the howling dog tours out of Canmore Alberta Canada
Both parents were sled dogs and her sister they kept to also run sled
Working is in her blood and I think that’s why she took the roll of looking after the ducks
I never trained her at all
Everything she does with them was self taught

My dogs are a chihuahua and a Bodauch. Half Doxen and half Boston terrier. When the babies are in the house peeping their heads off they are very curious because they think they are squeeking toys that they love so much. I have them in a puppy playpen and they can stick their heads through the bars and such and there is not a problem at all but if I was to let them run around I would be afraid they would try to catch the squeeker toy and that would be all bad. lol Once they realize they are ducks all is fine.

I also have a working dog that thinks looking after animals is his job...
My cat does not like his self-assigned job description.
Tbf, my other dog thinks she's a scout, and birds are prey... My dogs don't hang out with the birds unattended.

Ha ha ha. Cats crack me up

Such a scary but rewarding story
Glad he is getting better
Hope he starts eating better now too
Ping is still sitting around and not eating properly. He is limping again and his right "knee" feels warm. It's not red and not swollen, and moves fully -- examining it doesn't seem to hurt Ping. I am thinking he may have caught his foot on something and pulled the joint when he went missing -- he had to get out of the wading pool, over the bottom 4" of the metal pen doorway, and then climb through undergrowth over the potting table legs, to get to the side of the shed where he took refuge. Plenty of opportunity for catching his little leg.

I am giving him frequent hyrdrotherapy in the wading pool and sitting him right in front of his medicated rehydration solution, his medicated food and his medicated ducky soup. Every little he takes has Vit B and calories, but he isn't taking many bites! He is best when his buddy O Pato is on the outside of the pen eating duck food or drinking. The other ducks don't eat much from their food bowl during the day. So I am hoping Ping will eat a good dinner later today when O Pato comes of and is eating. Ping ate a quarter of a cup of pellets with brewer's yeast yesterday evening. Maybe a little more this evening if we are lucky

I am praying that he feels better soon.

May I ask how old is Ping?
He was an easter duckling in 2021 and so he is probably 2 years and 3 months. He is a special needs duck as he and his clutchmate were attacked by a raccoon. The other duckling died but Ping survived his injuries that included loss of the end of his bill. He was abandoned by his owner and came to me via a wildlife rehabber, who took him in out of kindness [licensed wildlife rehabbers are unable to take domestic ducks in Florida] but couldn't keep him.

He's always been little and thin, I presume from malnutrition while recovering from his injuries. When he was a year old, he and one of my rescued muscovy drakes decided they were BFF. They are incredibly tightly bonded. It was very strange how the bonding happened: the two ducks had been together since about May 2021 -- the muscovy is a few weeks younger than Ping. They had virtually ignored eachother during their first year -- I had two muscovy drakes and they were closer but not best buddies. Then suddenly Ping and O Pato were a pair last spring!
