survival prognosis after fly strike??? UPDATE on Roy!!

Roy is not feeling well again. Tonight he had trouble getting up into the coop to be with his girls.

I examined him, there is no sign of mites, they have been wormed, the wound that the maggots made is healing well.
I just don't get it.

I am putting vitamins in his water, giving him rooster booster B-12 and vit K verity.

I am just lost, he is 5 years old, could it be that he is just getting old.

I do not have a vet near me that will see a chicken, so I am on my own.
He still wants to be with his girls, he just seems to be a bit slower and out of it some.

any thoughts?? I just don't know what to do anymore for him.

Well, I would get him the Rooster Booster Poultry Cell supplement. Similar jar as the B-12, but the Poultry Cell has it all. And I mean all. Even iron. It will perk up a down rooster real quick. So, maybe he needs some of that extra iron or is lacking certain minerals. Other than that, is he still eating? Losing weight? Has the weather been wet? Is his comb paler? Any respiratory signs? Poop look normal? Was he wormed? For roundworms not maggots.

After reading all of this thread I see you did worm him. He sure looks healthy. He's gorgeous btw. It could be the heat. Some have recommended putting water in a 2 liter bottle, freezing it, then putting it out in the coop for them to get near to cool off. I would also still recommend the Poultry Cell for him given his age. A dose a few days a week would do him no harm and will give him some lift.

Love the hen saddles too!

Thanks I will look into the poultry cell. No sign if sneezing, poop us normal, he is eating and drinking and crowing. He has lost some weight. He has been wormed, no mites or lice, maggots are gone, wound has a scab. It could just be the heat.

Have you dewormed him since or because of the maggots?
He was given his second worming right before I discovered the maggots. I did not worm because of the maggots but because
it was their time to be wormed.

I discovered the maggots while I was giving him an exam looking for mites actually. No mites, lice, just maggots.

His comb is not pale but a red like it should be. no outward signs of illness, parasites, or disease. Just a slow going rooster.
I am beginning to think the heat. We are in the upper 90's with high humidity.

Even I don't go out unless I have to.

I follow the recommendation of other posters here on byc. I worm using 3/4cc for each bird directly in their mouths and repeat 10 days later. Following proper egg withdrawal.
If he's a big boy, which I think he is, that amount *might treat roundworms, probably won't treat cecal worms, band it will definitely not not treat capillary worms or gape worms. How much do you think he weighs?

really, I am following the directions of a very reputable member her on BYC who is very well know for his knowledge of worming.

I would say that he might be about 6-8 pounds. He looks bigger than he weighs.
