Surviving Another Depression.......What Would We Need?

Sewing skills...

- Know how to make basic clothing items like pants and shirts
- Know how to make sheets and towels
- Know how to make simple quilts
- Know how to knit or crochet scarves, hats, mittens and sweaters
(or have contact with someone who can do these things so that you can trade)

Canning skills and a place to store canned food...

A bicycle and a bicycle basket...

Gasless lawn mower or goat (hee hee)...

Gardening tools...

A plan about having children decided in advance with your spouse -- more kids means more hands to help (like the Amish families) but it also means more mouths to feed...birth control might not be available or affordable during a Depression and this would have to be considered

Same here! My DH and I were just talking about this last night after watching the news about the stocks and talking about whether or not we thought we had our food supply in order or not. Needless to say, we decided "NOT" and the one thought that helped perk us up a bit about the situation was that we have chickens! If all else fails, we do have a meat source and we do have eggs. Heaven forbid that I will have to kill one of my girls, but if need be to feed my children, then that source is available.

I don't mean to sound grim here, but if our financial system fails, so will the rest of the worlds.

It is not only our country that will be in trouble here.

I'm sure Canada will be feeling the affects of everything right along with you guys...not looking forward to it. It seems to me though that Canadians aren't at all worried about the recent events...but that is the Canadian way, eh...no worries until the roof caves in.

Actually, we are paying very close attention to what is going on south of the border. As much as we would like our economy be independent, it's not. Our 1# partner is USA, to the tune of 70% of all exports. Just take a look at the hit TSX took alongside DOW.

As for what to have, I agree with posters above:
Well w/ hand pump (remember, electricity may not be available!)
Fire wood & stove
Firearm or primitive weapon (bow, crossbow)
Good set of hand tools (shovel, scythe, rake, axe, etc.)
Seeds for next growing season
Stock-pile of animal feed for winter (they can free-range in the spring/summer)
Canning supplies
and of course a decent amount of starch & protein based canned & dry foods

Let's see what the market brings today. Elections (both in Canada and USA) will be fun this year.
