Surviving Minnesota!

Yep the praying mantis eat others bugs! hoping they will eat the bad bugs and not the good ones! My garden is in a field a little bit a ways from the house and the chickens don't go out there, or very rarely- it doesn't have much of any where for them to get away from aerial predator's and it's hot so they stay closer to the house where there are lots of trees. I never got the praying mantis before and if I'd have known how long they took to hatch I would have had them shipped sooner.

Where do you buy them? Will they reproduce on their own? Can the eggs freeze?

Is their a Preying Mantis farm somewhere? Does the government have it's fingers in it some how?

Good morning, I ordered from Planetnatural.com they cannot freeze so they aren't able to over winter here.
I don't know of any government involvement but you cant be too careful.

I could probably breed them here in the Banana Belt then...

I m thinking we should get the government involved, because we all know nothing ever goes wrong once the bureaucrats are in charge.

Had a chaotic night last....
Just a question for all of you though.
Does breeding a frizzle and a frizzle together give the chicks some kind of lethal gene that can make them bald, or their feathers very brittle?

I am not sure about chickens but in many animal breeds, breeding two recessives can sometimes cause negative consequences and most times it is lethal. Is the frizzle a recessive trait?

It has been a tough facebook day for me. My sister is a raving liberal who is constantly bad mouthing Christians and Conservatives and anybody who doesn't agree with her agenda. All her posts are hate filled and divisive, judgmental and hurtful. She is the most closed minded person except for what she thinks is right. I've been trying to decide if I should delete my facebook account as I get upset many times on there because of her. I hid her years ago, but we have alot of the same people as "friends" (family) as she is my sister of course, so we get into it on other peoples posts, because she will always post the opposite of whatever I say. For instance, the latest thing was about the shooting in falcon heights. It was on somebody elses post who the day of the shooting said she wished cops would quit killing black people. I of course said we should wait before judging on these kinds of things until all the investigation is complete. My sister chimes in about the cop being trigger happy, blah, blah, blah. I said we should settle down and wait for all the investigation to be complete before making judgements. It went on and on for her. Dog with a bone. it got ugly.

The thing is, I like seeing my other family and friends stuff, children's accomplishments, vacations, fun stuff. Plus invitations to stuff, ect... But, I don't think I can stay on there. I asked her to quit with her BS, she won't. she is hard headed, hard hearted, stubborn and always right. My husband had a FB account for about 2 weeks a few years ago but he deleted his account because of her toxic posts.

Any suggestions?

I may just not go on facebook for a few weeks and see if it is a big loss or not, i'm thinking it probably wouldn't be a big loss... I may end up being much happier without all the BS.

It has gotten to the point that today I told her f you in a fb message that got terribly nasty. frankly, I don't even want to go to any family functions if she is there, neither does my husband, she is toxic. We have to always just sit there and not say anything and listen to her spew her nastiness. I don't know why some people just go so far overboard with their BS, to the point where they are breaking up families. Sorry for my rant. I'm just very upset and really can't talk to anybody in my family but my DH about this, and I consider all of you good friends (family)

Cluckies: You can "Unfollow" embarrassing kin. That way you never see their posts but they remain "Friends". There is a list of Facebook Etiquette out there in Googling that sometimes I post on my wall if I'm not liking the flavor of my feed. Or I'll actually put it on their walls if I'm feeling ballsy. Over-sharing political views is a HUGE turn off to many, although it is a free country. I have defriended "Acquaintance" type person who think their opinion is the only right opinion. Sometimes being quiet and letting them go is all you can do. Most people understand this:

Jerry: I think I found where Big Foot is Hiding.
Inside the Muskie in Bena. The little kids-without paternal supervision--according to Ralphie, that line the streets and throw rocks from the bushes at your car when you drive through were too much for him.

We got rain last night but I don't know how much, it was very windy so there are oak pieces all over the yard.

My hollyhock was knocked down

and it had just started blooming so I tied it up and hope it'll be ok.

Yesterday: 4 down trees in our yard: 1 maple and 3 oaks. And a Popple down across the drive in. PITA stuff. FIL came over since DH is still in his immobilized knee brace. -->Nothing like our multiple neighbors on the lake, though, with huge White Pines piercing their roofs and in their living rooms. ---Hated losing that maple, though....

Good morning people. I have not been on for 2 days! It's been a butt-kicking weekend. The work thing is over-rated for sure. But glad to have jobs. Yes I have two this summer. But I digress....

I got word that we will have Junior by the weekend. I will stick him in the coop with the Illini girls. Saw a picture again of him...on someone else's phone. He has a orangey red hackle feathers. Gray and red mottled body. And bright Yellow Legs. ....and a single comb.

LOL. I can't wait, though. If he's as good as his Dad was...which I think he will be, we'll be happy.

Dixie and Babies still in my Car garage. They hop in and out of the brooder at roost time and morning time. Wait for us to open the garage door. LOL. I just want those particular layers (Blue and Dark brown) to get past Hawk Snack size....and with a rooster to watch their backs. They are my precious little pullets and I'll protect them as much as possible...right now, yet giving them a good life ranging a bit. And the Illini girls like the coop alot right now as it is...so they are protected pretty well. We'll get those Birds of prey tricked out of our morning and night routines quickly here I hope.

I finally came out . Rainy day . Got about 1 1/2 inches . Tomorrow should be better . The Bena story seems timely with the research team coming . I want to believe but do not . Was that a sweet cherry Ralphie ? Hey the praying mantis can take some freezing . They are native in zone 5 . So -10 to -20 the eggs survive . Caught fish last night so frying fish tonight . Did not do anything today but read . Windy and thunder now . So no fishing tonight . Not many weekenders this week . Spent their time off last week I guess .

Checked my new rain gauge an hour ago and we had 1 1/2 inches now were having a down pour and small hail, lots of thunder etc. I raked up all the debris from the previous storm yesterday now there is more but the winds haven't been as bad.
@Bogtown Chick sorry you lost trees! you had much worse weather than we did here.
