Surviving Minnesota!

Good for you! I would have done the same thing,

Or raised it myself

poor thing

I considered raising it myself but I have two cats, indoor/outdoor they spend the nights indoors because they would get killed by something outdoors at night. Also the squirrel would need a special diet, some kind of puppy formula and be fed every 3 hours unti it's eyes open then less often after that but still a hassle. So it was really easier to turn it over to the pro's.
It was a grey squirrel but almost black, we have several of those around here. One of them we saw a while back looked like it had a tumor right by it's eye

makes me wonder if that was the mother and something happened to it....? but the nest was really high and my DH wanted to get a ladder and put it back. That would have risked his life so I encouraged him to give up that crazy thought.
So anyway wildandfree.org does good things and it was cheaper for me to take it there and give a donation rather than buy puppy formula and get up during the night to feed it. So Ralphie is wrong

I am not worthy of sainthood. But I'm still ok, LOL

I am never wrong!!!

I think you should have picked up acorns and mashed them along with goats milk in a baby bottle........

I am going to be setting up some sprinklers for the birds today. I wish I had more misters. I might try to find some.

Otherwise, it is a do nothing day for me.

Chicken pedicures were given to 9 chickens tonight. Holy dirt and disgusting. Surprisingly, all except the silver laced Wyandotte loved the water and clippings.

Hi MNChick Mom - chicken pedicures? What is the purpose and how often do you do them? What about the big boys? I am thinking about doing the burrito wrap on the roos and giving them a pedicure.

I am going to be doing some spur trimming when the heat is over. I am not sure who will get them, yet. I need to give one to Bert, I am thinking of giving King George one to save the hens backs.

BUT I keep thinking that is the roosters swords to protect against predators too. What to do. what to do??? Any ideas?

Morning . Ralphie are you going to trim or remove ? You can twist with pliers and the spur cover comes off leaving the core . Kind of tender for awhile . Trimming is more like blunting the end . I remove if they curl back toward the leg .

That's a tough decision Ralphie. I think if the hens are getting beat up badly I'd trim the spurs. Or get the cute little saddles/aprons for the hens?

One of the 3 cockerels was trying to crow at 5am.

Chicken pedicures is just a fancy way of saying we inspected and trimmed the toenails of the 4H birds. The kids soaked their feet in a warm plain water bath then held the birds while I inspected and trimmed the toenails. Mine didn't require much trimming as they were very young it was more or less an inspection. I used a handheld small dog trimmer. This was first time for me and I just You-Tubed some videos. I would love to see a professional do it or take training from a professional.

I haven't has a lit of time to update anyone on my birds lately.

I've decided the breeds I am going to get for next year. I am going to get Black Isbars, Black Copper Marans, Pearl White Leghorns, Buff Plymouth Rocks, and maybe White Crested Black Polish.

State fair is this weekend. Hopefully I can buy some Blue Cochins, or find a breeder.

My mom and I made a deal that if I wear my retainer every day for 4 months I get another chicken coop.

I've also been thinking about my laying business. So far I've gotten as far as at 72 weeks most laying breeds start going downhill, so I will sell those birds, or butcher. And I will have to hatch out a lot of chicks but it's worth it.

I also have to convince my parents to let me have a starter coop. My dad will probably be for it.

The 2 chicks I have now, one of them seems to be a pullet the other a cockerel. Hopefully it changes though.
RJ is still the alpha but him and Buckbeak have been fighting a bit more lately. Iggy, George, and my mille fleur need to go as I don't need them. But like usual no one wants to buy them. And the only one big enough to butcher is Iggy

I think with their kicks they are amply equipped to ward off predators. Of course, still pretty new at all this chick stuff so I must give the usual disclaimer. Right now, IMHO if those roos (especially Tom) cannot do what he is suppose to do, which is, protect, then he deserves to DIE!
