Surviving Minnesota!

Who taught my parents how to use a computer?

Our punishments included: cutting wood all day the next day if we missed curfew....and if Dad sensed that you may have had any alcohol what-so-ever in your system you were automatically sentenced to cutting brush with the "little chainsaw" which sounded a lot like a "Ticked off Weed Trimmer." Punishments never left any physical marks but they left a lasting impression.

Sounds like you have the perfect parents... However, the chainsaw is a little overboard, there is nothing wrong with a blunt axe.

Do you (anyone) think pureed pumpkin is ok for day old chicks? I'd like to give broody mom some but the chicks will get into it as well.

It's so stinking hot I gave them the homemade electrolytes water, they seem to be fine but mom is uncomfortable.

Same we get punished with fixing fence, cutting wood, fixing tractors, and taking out old rusty nails out of tarred railroad ties

Layers - don't you pay attention to those two old roosters! They are just crowing. While I can agree that, after paying out a couple of thousand for braces, IF this were just the normal run-of-the-mill instance of being irresponsible about wearing that retainer - then I agree with them. Yet not one person on here knew what you endure with those retainers. Good for you and four months . . . . not such a long time. You have good parents and they obviously care about you alot.

You ole men! go chop wood.

What old roosters????

BTW I know how much retainers hurt, I have had to give them to lawyers before.

How did everyone's birds fare today?

I lost 2, both white sport chicks, If I am going to have a chick die it seems to be one of them.

I am also taking a huge risk tonight. I am going to leave the doors open on the brooder/shed. I am going to hope and pray my cages hold. I have not had a coon problem yet and they are my biggest fear. At this point shutting the doors would be a death sentence, the concrete floor is a hug heat sink.

I have not lost a bird to a predator, they only yet this year (knocking on wood)....... I think my cages can hold up to anything but a coon. With them you cannot be sure.

I know the heat in the shed would kill them. I will check around 10-11 and if it has cooled I will close the doors then. I really worry more in this heat than 40 below.

How hot were your temps today? So sorry you lost 2, how old were they?
Good luck with the open doors tonight!

Oh no sorry to hear of the loss of the sports. I just got done doing rounds, ours are doing good, thanks to electrolytes and the big ventilation fan on high. Coop temp with the heat retaining cement floor is holding at79 degrees.
The farm chickens are panting some, so found a box fan and kicked that on in addition to the vent fan.

I am concerned too. The SS are panting ALOT. I put a small fan in the coop to move the air around on the roost bar. It is so hot out there. Tom and his girls got to free-range today because I thought it would be easier on them. Even the DH agreed with that strategy and again tomorrow - the really hot, hot day and I have to go clean up a construction sight. So I will not be here to watch them but will let those four out if they survive this night. So hot!
