Surviving Minnesota!

I haven't has a lit of time to update anyone on my birds lately.

I've decided the breeds I am going to get for next year. I am going to get Black Isbars, Black Copper Marans, Pearl White Leghorns, Buff Plymouth Rocks, and maybe White Crested Black Polish.

State fair is this weekend. Hopefully I can buy some Blue Cochins, or find a breeder.

My mom and I made a deal that if I wear my retainer every day for 4 months I get another chicken coop.

I've also been thinking about my laying business. So far I've gotten as far as at 72 weeks most laying breeds start going downhill, so I will sell those birds, or butcher. And I will have to hatch out a lot of chicks but it's worth it.

I also have to convince my parents to let me have a starter coop. My dad will probably be for it.

The 2 chicks I have now, one of them seems to be a pullet the other a cockerel. Hopefully it changes though.
RJ is still the alpha but him and Buckbeak have been fighting a bit more lately. Iggy, George, and my mille fleur need to go as I don't need them. But like usual no one wants to buy them. And the only one big enough to butcher is Iggy

In that case - do you do the butchering?

Morning . Ralphie are you going to trim or remove ? You can twist with pliers and the spur cover comes off leaving the core . Kind of tender for awhile . Trimming is more like blunting the end . I remove if they curl back toward the leg .

I like to blunt the end as when the spur hardens they're sharp again.

Well we had about 3 tenths of a inch of rain last evening .Looked like rain earlier but sunny now .I was budding Stanley plum onto wild plum . Really humid out there . I have a row of wild plum seedlings . I noticed one has slightly different leaves so probably crossed to another type plum . I bought these seedlings of eBay last year . So who knows what it could be . I notice these things . Usually good at guessing parentage be it chickens , squash or even berries or at least noticing something off .

You are so lucky you are not my kid. I would take a different approach to yours. I would tell my kid, you wear your retainers everyday until the dentist says it comes out or your life will be miserable. Starting with grounding and I will take one chicken away per week until you do what you should....

Better tell your parents how lucky you are to have them as parents....You could have had me instead!

We are impatiently awaiting the wild plums this year too....not sure what kind but every couple of years they will produce a good crop of small plums. Secret location at the back of our field that takes a 4 wheeler to get to but Mmmmmm so worth the wait. They make wonderful Jams and Jellies tooo. Now my mouth is watering in anticipation.

Ralphie, I agree with your comment as relates to keeping the retainer in. The old adage "spare the rod and spoil the child" comes to mind. In their youth my boys were extremely well behaved, and people used to remark on their manners and good behavior. Even so, when they reached about 15 or 16 all hadies broke loose. There were some trying times I will say!!

As relates to spurs being used for protection against predators. Very few predators of consequence in my neighborhood would be deterred by the rooster's spurs. Most likely would be effective against another rooster, a guinea, maybe a hawk and likely a human.

It is extremely hot and humid here today. I do not envy my wife and her workers building a paver patio and walkway in this, and I am content now to have my chores done to enjoy the central air.
I will have it nice and cool for when the little bread winner returns to prepare my dinner. It seems that a woman's work is never done? You would think that they would learn to plan better, but a good man is hard to find!

The only reason I take it out is cause I broke my last one when I got bucked off my horse and hit my head

Then while hurdling at practice I hit a hurdle and fell, broke the metal hook.

And I have to wear one during the day so I have to take it out every time I eat. Which is quite often
Also I have to wear one til I'm 21

actually 3.... 2 at night and 1 during the day. And I can't wear it for 2/6 of my classes in school.

Who taught my parents how to use a computer?

Our punishments included: cutting wood all day the next day if we missed curfew....and if Dad sensed that you may have had any alcohol what-so-ever in your system you were automatically sentenced to cutting brush with the "little chainsaw" which sounded a lot like a "Ticked off Weed Trimmer." Punishments never left any physical marks but they left a lasting impression.
