Surviving Minnesota!

Yup, I work at the Cambridge location. As for the polish and silkies they are just going to be for pets I think more than anything. Since we really only need 6 real egg layers. If they lay an egg every now and again that would just be a bonus from them. xD And it seems people everywhere are having trouble with birds not laying right now. On a Facebook group I am on that's that talk of the week, the lack of birds laying. Not sure what it is about this year. Maybe in Minnesota it's the drastic changing weather? It's pretty warm out now but a few days ago in was bellow 0. I know the weather change is rough on my horse. Going to have to get the vet out for one of them.

That's why I recommended thatches. That's what I use. My coop is almost dry with the thatches
I've not heard of that? do you basically tie up bundles of hay and insulate with it?

Hey new to the site and fellow Minnesotant. I haven't gotten my chicks yet and am actually curious where are the best places to get chicks here in Minnesota. I work at Tractor Supply Co but our location is up in the air if we get chickens in and I don't know what breeds we will get. I am mostly looking for egg layers. I am also getting some Polish and silkies down the line from breeders.
Welcome! always good to meet new chickeners here in the promised land :) If I am going to order chicks from a hatchery, Hoovers in Rudd, IA is my favorite. I wouldnt be surprised if the chicks your TSC gets in are from Hoovers possibly.

If you are interested in any of the Breeds @duluthralphie has to offer I can vouch for his birds. I got a group of layers from him and they are bright, healthy, and well cared for birds.

Good Morning and welcome to BYC..

I happen to know where you can get chicks and some Polish.

I have them! We are close too. Do you work in the TSC in Cambridge?

I am just outside of Zimmerman. Of course this would depend on my lazy slackers deciding to lay eggs. I have some eggs in the incubator now but there are more toad (meat) eggs than layers or cool birds in there. My first hatch or two are from myself and another person on here whose daughter shows birds. Just not having any luck on the egg laying this year. Last year at this time I had a nearly full incubator at this time, this year I have a partial tray full.

You might have to see Kloppers for egg layers he has all mine that were laying eggs I think, stupid birds! Erilibrd took the other three that knew how to lay eggs. I have even tried giving them pep talks. That did not work,

I took the head off a bird last week to scare them into laying, that did not work. Torture is all I have left to try.

Merry Christmas Jerry,, How long a trip is it?

We are headed to our daughters in Duluth shortly.
Your birds are doing well with my flock. we have had several more of the blue/green eggs. only 1 at a time so not sure if it is just one or more with the color

Copied from facebook... I know a bunch of fish houses and trailers have been getting stolen around central MN. I had my trailer stolen yesterday in Palmer and the stupid 3 thiefs came back today trying for more but our neighbor came out and they hauled ***** outta there. We are looking for a black 4 door truck with the license plate JYD-921 North Dakota plates

Looks like if you are missing your fish house, trailer, ice castle, head to North Dakota and look around... may be living in it on the north Dakota oil field. This makes sense now as most of these thefts are along hwy 10... fishermen don't steal.

I bet it's the protesters. They're tired of living in tents. Most people who are here from the oil boom have a house now.

It's basically small wooden boards nailed or screwed to the studs. You then stuff hay behind them. I'll get pictures today

DW and i decided that our chickens need a chicken swing for christmas. we have seen pictures and videos and it looks hilarious! Hopefully i should have a spare minute to whip one up from scrap wood this weekend.

Were you on Briggs or Julia with your house?

Are they driving on the ice now? I went by there the other day but did not notice if houses were on the lake or not,

I went by Baxter and Blue yesterday and saw they had lots of house, but mainly portables.

I am going to say "No" to the thatches. A board stuffed with hay or straw seems like a good place for mice and rats to hide. I have one side of my coop open to the air to allow for no moisture build up. My coops are basic wind breaks. Moisture is worse than cold to me. I have the rafters blocked so most of the birds cannot go into them. The turkeys, guineas and layers can get into the rafters on there part of the coop.

The air is heavy today with moisture, this is the weather that really takes the combs down. I picked up Queen Lizzie today and saw the tips of her comb were even nipped. The high moisture and extreme cold are a bad combination.

Cuddles still has his comb, the heating pads are working, it does look like his front point got nipped a tad. Hopefully a judge will not notice it (like if)....

Ralphie I was jw if it sat out cuz its outside in the pic. But um sure it was just outside for lighting?
