Surviving Minnesota!

U guys spoil your birds! Mine don't get a heater! I refuse to heat my coop. What's the point? Ours is insulated well and has a small pop door and stays 10 degrees in this weather.

Mine is not insulated has cracks everywhere, was an old grainery so it has hatches on the top, the door doesn't fit properly, and the eaves are open, which I am fixing this weekend. The first year we did not have heat or thatches, it was -15 in there one day.. And it was only -20 outside. Never again will I not have heat until it's insulated.. I had a chicken lose half a toe

Sounds like everone has been quite busy with the weather. Same for me....last week I was hit by a deer. Yes I was hit...I was completely stopped and a doe attempted to waltz thru my rear corner panel/bumper.

I caved and gave my chickens a single heat lamp, and fresh bedding of pine over the weekend. Hopefully they are toasty.

This weather just stinks....literally on the farm. My in laws sewer/drain field froze. So in the absence of my husband (working in fargo) I was given the opportunity to rent a heated snake and between my father in law and I we were able to thaw it.

Tomorrow I get to pick up the meat from a steer that decided to skate on ice a few weeks ago.

On a positive note my son had a blast with his Grandpa yesterday. Son learned jowls to change tires on combine, and skid loader. He also had a great time fixing and tinkering with grandpa. I'm so very thankful Grandpa has the patience to teach and occupy him for a whole day.

boyo we are a chatty group tonight! im tying to keep up while pulling the night shift at work. It is the time of year we wrap up all the financial data for the calendar year and big things happen. including my bonus calculations... On the bright side, DW and i spent a little quality time with Jillian Michaels while i was babysitting. Just enough time to break a sweat before the next thing broke and I was back to my desk.
Be careful with that jillian and her thousands of squats. One of my knees really started to hurt, so I had top quit the program. The other knee now sounds like their is sand in there when walk up and down stairs or squat
Lvie I hope u guys figure out your car troubles!
Thanks Holms! I hope we do also. Its is a 2009 Lincoln with only 116,000 on it and not a problem at all until now. We will get it done. Congrats on that 'friend' thingy although I don't know what that is all about. Anyone that wants to explain to me I would welcome it.
When a vehicle has AWD there is a place that needs the 6 oz. of fluid (like oil) changed about every 20 to 30,000 miles Who knew? Not me - not the DH; apparently not the mechanic that is retiring on us in April. But his nephew knows! That nephew works on my DH diesel and will become our new go-to mechanic. We will miss the mechanic that we have had for years and years. Oh. A mear $1,500 and my car will be fixed. Ouch! Change that stuff if you have a AWD. On a chicken note - I am heating my coop! No lectures needed, no shaming. One of my RIR is in full molt and poor Reggie's comb is horrible. It is not beach weather in there but I am not making them endure these temperatures. As it begins to warm up I will pull the heat lamps one at a time. So! I want to say that my CLB chick is quick! She has here roost spot in the line of the heat and the other birds have not caught completely on about those roosts. One SS was using one end of them. There are two and five birds could easily fit on each but usually its just the young pullets that use them. The bigger, fuller birds are just fine on their regular roost. Its below freezing in their coop, just not below 20.
I heat my coop and run, these are my babies.

I hear my coop and run, these are my babies.

There are no squats in this program. We are only doing the cardio programs

And me, being a BC wanna be - was thinking I wanted one cute little bantie which I would name Dixie II to brood for me. I still feel desolate for the loss of Dixie BC. I am sorry she is gone.

That's so nice of you Ivie. She did have some character for being a foofoo bird. I was always intrigued by her and her cycles. Learned a ton about egg cycles actually. Her life was probably more natural than the others with her egg laying and brooding. She was a trooper being snubbed or excluded sometimes by the others. But then she would seek out the rooster when her time for setting was close at hand. Lol. Rog did the best he could with the small fuzz ball. And when she had her babies she almost looked quite proud of them. She was top hen in my book during those times. You get a bantam Cochin or silkie. You'll have a blast with them.

Probably him as a child.. lol

I bet you're right! I didn't think of that
