Surviving Minnesota!

I'm glad you don't live closer. I'm in love with this one!

I think I have to be done with bantams. The thought of having them is nice but (don't hate me for this bantam lovers) they are practically worthless birds. You can't really eat them, they lay tiny eggs when they do lay and they are always broody... I am gonna stick with standards... Anywayd I have replacement for Zeus cuz some people are poultry enablers here **cough**destiny**cough**

I only have one bantam left and she's my oldest bird. She just keeps on ticking. My Silkie went to the big coop in the sky around a month ago. I really enjoy their personalities. Unfortunately, there have been too many easy meals for the owls lately, so I don't know if I'll get another one this year.

Good luck with your hatch!

I am thinking of doing some test marketing of "Pre-Cracked" eggs, it would save people the problems associated with that first little crack in the egg.

I could even advertise them as being naturally cracked by Mother Nature herself....

MnNice I think that is my cat. Not that I care which one I get. Based on the chipmunks around here I should have a dozen cats.

One of my Black Copper Marans has been missing for two days now. I don't think she got back into the coop in time Monday night. They were all running around during the day. Either she succumbed to the cold or fed something. It happens. I just wish it was easier to replace that breed. They're my favorite birds.

Anyone else looking forward to Spring?

That one looks like a top notch chipmunk hunter. You better take it.

I had 8 cracked eggs yesterday out of 10. They must have laid early. Let me know how your test marketing goes =)

@MinnesotaNice Spring cannot come soon enough. I am so lucky to have any birds today..

I have to confess to a stupid thing. I hate to have you all think I am perfect all the time.

Last night when I came in from my last trip to the pole barn, most of the turkeys and chickens were in the coop, but not all. I went into the house, then went down the basement to work on my incubators and see how they were running. I disinfected them, cleaned them really well, checked temps and humidity just monkeyed around down there for a while.

Judy had supper ready I came upstairs and completely forgot to lock the coop door. DUH!

Luckily everything was fine this morning. There I have made my confession and feel way better.

Cuddles comb is still looking oh but I am afraid even with the heat lamp it might be slightly damaged. I sure hope not, I want his comb in one piece next summer. I have worked too hard and spent to much to keep his comb good.

Good luck with cuddles. I've been putting bag balm on combs every night and the cold is still taking it's toll. I may have to start going out in the morning before work, too.

Show bird problems, Ralphie. Showbird problems.
Junior has black points. One piece fell off the back blade and he was looking pretty good...but I noted a blister below some of the black on one of the points again this AM. -23 F. This AM. -10 in the coop with the radiant flat panel. I flicked on the red light, too, To warm 'em up this AM. The little Lavender Illini went right under it. Another day to be cooped up and then Sunday...it looks like I can open the pop door. -5 or more they are cooped birds. That's where they roost during those temps anyways. So may as well close the pop door and keep the cold out as much as possible.

Cuddles lives in a large dog cage. I have heating pads above his roost and a red bulb shining under him. TBH I cannot believe the bulb is not warming it more. I only have a small metal waterer hanging in his cage so he cannot get his comb and waddles wet.

It was frozen today! How can it freeze 18 inches from a heat lamp?

I want spring!

It's a balmy 0 here. I left my pop door shut today. They aren't going out anyways.

We haven't had a frozen egg yet *knock on wood* we will see today. It usually warms up nicely on sunny days plus the body heat and light bulbs. Still haven't had to plug in my heated water bowls. Just bang out a skin of ice when it was really cold out.
