Surviving Minnesota!

Ralphie if you can not tell a rose comb from a single comb chick I think you may be untrainable on sexing chicks .

Or I could have old people eyes.....

Ralphie, I had a good laugh at your response to my post. I do not think you should make such references to members of your own family however ?

Nice photos Layers.

Ralphie, it seems that you are getting much help in the Marans vs Dominique identification question. Hope it results in mystery being solved.

I have no choice but to call them as I see them........I Suppose I could have said it in a way people did not know my brother was one of them...

BUT in his defense he is the most grounded Professors I have ever met in his desire to work the ground, to raise animals and so forth. Now if I could just change his politics to something worthwhile......

The mystery will be the all black chick he is so cool. BTW I did figure out which of mine are females. Sort of. I can now double the price on the girls. To make up for the loss I will take on the boys.

I am also assuming it is best I have this sexing down pat before I go to New Ulm next weekend or some wise old chicken person will buy all my girls and I will be trying to sell a box of boys to the "real" chicken people.

Maybe I can talk Destiny into buying a box of boys before I leave there.

Morning peeps. Glad I could inspire you Ralphie!

Layers, nice pics, thanks for sharing.

Ok, so remember I was saying how great my girls looked? Well about a week ago, I come home from work, go let them out, and 3 of them look like their lower backs got into a shredder, terrible, the feathers are all wavy, broken off, crazyness. I have no rooster. Still trying to figure that one out. The only thing I can think is that when they dust bath, Fi "helps" them by picking at them, I've seen her do it and be really rough. But not to this extent. So not sure if that is it. I raised their door up in case they were scraping it. But it all happened in 1 day... Have any of you had this?

They might need a Toad rooster to protect them from this activity....

I have not had that Cluckies. Lower back is a fave spot of feather pickers though isn't it...?

Ralphie I am excited for your class. If we bring our class payment do we get sexed pullet as a 'take home' part of the project?

,Coop run this morning in pjs And t- shirt. Gorgeous morning.

I have a cold this weekend. So done with influenza for 3 weeks and right into a cold. Stupid. Immune system is crappy this year.

No, you get a potentially prize winning cockerel to improve the genetics of your birds........Maybe 2.

I use a light with a magnifier for old eyes . Tried vent sexing with it . All look the same to me . I do use the light to check chainsaw chain . To see if the tooth cleaned up . I saw a chipmunk on the deck this morning . First sighting of the year . Lots of birds singing today . Mostly Cardinals . Someone mentioned fly tie birds . I have a Phoenix cross rooster that I will mate back to Phoenix for this . I have a autistic fly tier that I gift some skins to every year . Mostly anything I have but trying to get better feathers for him .

Hey Ralphie how are your kitties doing?

OC is great, she is kind of spooked by me, but will come to me so I can pet and hold her, but it takes her a while.

GC is braver and comes right away to the food and milk, however she refuses to ;et me touch her at all. Judy went out yesterday with me to give them milk they stayed hidden the whole time she was there. After she left they came out to visit me.

Good Morning Chickeners . . . .

Love the pictures Layers. Thanks for sharing.

So the kitties are settled in and responding to you Ralphie. Thats good. They are doing their job as barn kitties and that is what is important.

A bit windy but very nice warm wind. I have carried 6 - 5 gallon buckets of 'stuff' out of the uncovered run. Preparing for Spring by cleaning out the covered run refuge five gallons at a time.

Poor Regina. The lone little CLB (along with Reggie). As I have been working in their coop I notice how much she is picked on. No wonder she does not lay often. She is too stressed trying to avoid the bullies. They do seem to go after her and where one stops another will pick up. What is that all about? I have begun talking to her and being the caretaker that I am - favoring her more than the others. The Two CW are small like Regina and I have been considering separating the three out to their own coop so she can have peace. Reggie used to not let anyone pick on her. It seems even he has deserted her. I am observing for now.

Have a nice day everyone. I am moving on for now. Got to get er done.

I saw the girls out in the front lawn doing Pest control yesterday, they looked happy. However, two of them were at the top of the banana tree.
