I remember what our neighbor did! He took a big tractor tires and put a layer of plastic on the bottom and filled it with dirt, wood ash and pine needles or something like that. I am gonna have to ask him.

Okay - birds were on their roosts and so was she? I pulled the eggs to put them away. Its all good. She tried and did not like it and walked away.

Guess you can try again next time! lvie, my Gold comet is 3, she lays every day, some days twice. last summer she laid 1 to 2 eggs a day (she was 2, so i'm not sure where they are getting the 30 week thing) all mine layed better last year then the year before. my EE started laying as well, 5 out of 6 days. my others have not started yet, but i'm sure they will soon. I would say they are good layers still. I'll let you know how it goes this summer. I try to keep pretty good records, only the mice got a hold of my egg log book and destroyed a few pages from last fall

I had more stuff marked, but lost it, arghhhhh. but it was good reading!

So Cluckies, what do YOU think about your GC. I got six freebies from Runnings last September and they are the best birds! I have one little snot and I put her with the older hens because they will not put up with her attitude. I took the dogs for a walk this morning and I had to bring one girl, I call her buddy, back because she wanted to come along. She seems to be alone alot and when I appear she hangs totally with me. I can pick her up and pet her. Just the kind of bird a person falls in love with. A true pet.

While in TSC today I saw they had Marans chicks . It said black but I would guess black copper .

Anyone growing blueberries ? I bought 2 bushes today plus a PH test kit . Thought a pile of rotted wood chips would be acid enough . Nope tested 7 . Need 4.5 to 5.5 . Looking for ideas that work .

and loud. She comes running if I walk out the door

. when I get home from work and she sees me she yells out, it sounds like she is yelling "mmmoooommmm" she is silly.

Everyone knows I love our dogs. Yeti, our white Great Pyreneese who is 1 and Kepler our half yellow lab/Great Pyreneese mix who is around 7. He was a rescue a few years ago. Anyway, today I loved them even more. I was out collecting eggs after school, in the rain and they both started this nasty growl and Yeti took off around the coop out toward the field barking and growling and Kep was doing the same but stayed close to us. Now don't get too excited about what was "out there" because it was of no danger to myself or little 7 year old son, but to my chickens it could have been. A flock of GEESE were trying to land in the field. They started to descend and off went the dogs. They never touched down and had to fly back upwards and on their way. I have ferocious dogs that are incredibly big babies when it comes to getting attention but they do their job! With the bird flu starting to show up again I am glad they do not let other birds land in the yard.

Oh, and I got 32 eggs today! AND the eggs go into LOCKDOWN tomorrow night. They were set in the evening so I should wait until evening to lock them down right? I better count the calendar it might actually be TONIGHT!

YIKES! It is tonight! I sure am glad I popped on here again tonight! Now I am off to adjust humidity and candle to see who is moving and getting ready to hatch! I am so excited!

Ok, eggs are in lockdown. 15/15 eggs had good movement so here's to a 100% hatch in a few days!

Some days it just don't pay to get out of bed!! Got my kid shipped off to school and tried to tackle a few chores around the house and farm before heading to work. I moved a bunch of chicks from basement out to the garage brooders. In the meantime I don't know what I twisted in my back, but I saw stars and have been hobbling like someone in a nursing home. I go to work stinking like Aspercreme and swallowed a few Tylenol. So I'm barely at work for less than 2 hours of a 10 hour shift and my zipper on my pants busts. I snatched them together and high tailed it to our office to beg safety pins out of anyone that had a few. All the guys thought it was hilarious that my biggest goal was to make it through the night without losing my pants. I get home to find 5 of the chicks I just moved out to the garage were too stupid to go/stay under the heat lights and were laying dead. I have time for 4 hours of sleep before I start all over again tomorrow. (or today...whatever it is).
