Surviving Minnesota!

:lau   Good luck!

I am betting ND is not a lot of different than around here. People do not want to pay more than 10 bucks for a bird, regardless of size or how it is raised.

X2. I dont even think the crazy foodies in the cities would pay that.

Got a red heifer calf this morning out of a cow eho weaned off the best steer last fall. This will most likely be a keeper but who knows.

AND another cow is calving as I type. Big black baldy who hopefully has a baldy steer lol.

Layers....I read an article about the high dollar Bresse table bird being served in some of the European restaurants. Wish I could find it, I'd forward it to you. But the gist was that there is a very specific feeding regiment and housing requirements the growers employ to be able to sell the bird for top dollar. If I remember correctly, the whole thing was rather intensive. Also read about one way these restaurants will serve the bird....they hang it above a small fire eminatinting a wood smoke and throughout the day they costantly twirl/spin the bird over this smoke. Takes most of the day, but you end up with a hundred dollar piece of smoked chicken. It was interesting but I can't imagine taking the time to prepare it like that, nor paying that kind of money to eat it.

Yes there is a very strict feeding consisting of lime and milk soaked oats. Some of my relatives in Bismarck said that they'd be interested in raising the birds for me for 1/2 the profit.
I can't imagine preparing it but I sure would love to eat It!
They is a wide canyon between what they say they will pay and what they will pay....

I'm Hoping as he is family he will pay that much but i will see

Been doing alot of work around the flocks lately and I know, but never paid attention, that I have a BO that lays a shell-less egg. I have found them in the nest box. I saw her do it just a while ago. I know I should look it up and probably will anyway but . . . . will she ever lay normal again. Additionally, I have a feather picker. This same BO has a feathless rump. I am sure it gets picked while they roost. Will that feather picker not pick feathers? What are your experiences chickeners?
