Surviving Minnesota!

Couple of pictures of lone Ranger. He is son of one of ralphies. He will soon be going through boot camp with daughter next week. (This is technically my son's rooster, but he has agreed to 4 days of chores in exchange for his sister to tame lone ranger.)
Lone Ranger is about 10 weeks old. Good luck to both lone Ranger and daughter.

Looking good!

All of my chicks from Ralphie are in Boot camp and actually quite sweet. The EE roos are getting kicked out of boot camp though along with the pullets. The chicks have already been outside for 2 weeks with no heat! With this warm weather I decided to kick them unto the coop early this year.

I have to do some culling this weekend. I have decided that the Welsummers and Barred Rocks are going in the first wave of culling. Only two Wellies are laying and one lays once a week maybe twice if I am lucky. The other that lays has major glitches. Half of her eggs are hard as a rock and the oteer is super thin shelled and they are swirled like a dinosaur egg. Plus her eggs always have huge meat spots and the white are like water. She has always laid eggs like this...

My cochin lays heavily speckled eggs. I usually keep her eggs since they're smaller, but sometimes those spots leave way to a very thin shell. I'm not a fan. Did you ever eat eggs from Cleo when you had her? They lay some pretty huge eggs. I have yet to fry one up, but use them for baking all of the time.

UGH!:th  reference the hen/rooster ratio thing with broodies.  Well in any case at least I have somebody who will take the roosters and butcher them for themselves.  Call me whatever you want but I had the hardest time butchering my 9 roosters last year...it is just not my thing.  It's not that I don't eat the meat, because I do ... I just can't do the killing/cleaning part.

I thought it was kind of cool to see her roll that egg out...isn't it funny how animals know these things, it just amazes me.

I hate it too. The good thing is you can say you've tried it.... Kudos for that. :hugs

It's funny that we have our wives tales about broodies and such. Dixie Gave me two boys. And then she gave me a girl. (I only gave her a few eggs for coop space issues) But While she sat on that girl egg I sure gave her the business every once in a while about liking to hatch me roosters. So then she got me the hen.

Dixie did very well kicking out non-viable eggs. It's super weird they know how to do that. I ordered some BLRW eggs one time and wanted them so bad...I kept sticking them back under her to be sure she wasn't wrong. She wasn't.

Having broodies is a fun and beautiful thing. The chicks are a little less socialized vs. brooding your self. But it really gives you a great chicken learning experience. Another chapter in the Chicken Nerd Book.

Two year's later. One little hen. Loretta Lynn.

Runnings is selling Wyandottes; Silver-laced and perhaps Golden-laced along with Cochins and a few other desirable breeds on May 4th. Just thought I would let ya all know. I would love to have Wyandottes but there just is no room for any more birds at this time.

My Gold Laced Wyandottes have been the crankiest birds I've ever owned. My silvers have always been friendly and years ago I had a Columbian Wyandotte that was sweet as peas. I'm still trying to get a pair of Blue Laced Red Wyandottes this year as my Silvers will be moving on out.
