Surviving Minnesota!

Jerry, I just looked at your profile and saw your last name is Segler....

I had no idea you were on BYC!

Aww you are making me blush .

If you handle them, the cots can be decently tamed, yes, but they're rather spazzy. Gamebird maintenance feed is what you're s'posed to feed them, I believe... I fed mine corn meal as per the advice of my neighbour. No idea if that's a good idea or not. The littles got gamebird starter.

What do you mean by keep them? Housing, or?
They're fairly simple to keep, well, the coturnix anyway. Other varieties are even harder, or so I've heard... All mine were cots.

Thanks for the info! Yes, how you house them. Would it be similar to chickens? I looked up some information. I didn't realize there were so many different types of quails.

Most seem to use a wire bottomed cage with a padded ceiling, the padding keeps them from knocking their brains out when they get scared and go straight up. If you tried free ranging them like chooks, they'd never be seen again... That's how I lost the first male I had. 2nd one went kaput to apparent heat stroke, despite being in a shaded pen with fresh water. Wasn't even above 85°, so :idunno

I can't believe it took me this long to think of it. I have a partial solution to Ralphies skid loader and cage problems. I will switch him even up with our skid loader. Seeing as he is already familiar with older hydrolics the settling of the bucket shouldn't be an issue. And bonus......no need to buy special diesel this one runs on gas.

Just kidding....glad you are doing better.

I'm not sure how interested I am now! Ha hah! I keep hearing of more and more people keeping them for eggs and the dinner table.

They're still fun little birdies, they just require more/different care than chickens. Hatching is especially fun... They zip super fast and synchronize their hatches. Really does look like popcorn -- well, muddy popcorn. ;)

PC hen is broody so she is taking over incubation of Cochin eggs.

And I can't not share a picture of my favorite cochin!
After this hatch of eggs hatch i will be setting around 25 eggs out of all my females with the black cockerel over them. I think Gary has fulfilled his life as a breeder, hopefully he throws some nice splash babies! April will be done after I put the black over her once.
