Surviving Minnesota!

My SS chicks are 4 weeks old now. They are very friendly. My DH is supposedly taking care of them while I sit in the hospital with my mom she is in icu. She hasn't woken today.
Sorry to hear of you mom.

Introducing our newest addition! only took me 2 hours to get it! Can't tell if there are any others already hatched and don't know how long she will continue to sit, this little guy is feisty and wants to roam but I still hear lots of peeps from under my broody...she continues to roll the eggs but if they don't hatch soon,I think she will abandon them so she can care for this little guy - a Barred Rock I suspect and check out his legs, they are fuzzy like a Cochin!

Cuteness!

and then thought I would share the latest pics of my greenhouse which is almost complete...just needs the raised beds inside and the potting shed built on the back...oh and a door!

Love the greenhouse! you gonna let the chickens stay in there during the winter?

We moved the tiger lilies the other day, they were up about an inch.

Here is my web surfing buddy today..

He is getting so big, but she still likes my keyboard and fingers..

I'm surprised he is not in Judy's apron...

Ooo. I just saw my 5 year tag. On April 13th I brought home Tootsie and 8 other chicks from L & M. I thought they'd all be dead at the end of that summer. And the coop would be a playhouse. And here I am... coop still a chicken house and getting pooped in.

The kids have grown so much since then. But we all still love the chickens.
Congrats on 5 years!

OMG! How cute, what is the breed and why is the chick inside with you? (I probably missed your post where you explained it!)

Love all the pics!! especially where the one hen is lounging next to someone sitting on the ground, how cute!

That is my plan!! Much brighter and a bigger area for them so they won't go stir crazy next winter having to stay inside.

#2 chick arrived today!!! and I think I saw another chick hatching when she lifted herself up to rearrange the eggs! How long will she sit on the remaining eggs? I moved the food and water right in front of the box because I am afraid the chicks will get dehydrated because she will not get off the nest to save her life! (or her chicks lives) the oldes chick went crazy eating off the plate when I put it there and the water dish appeared a little lower as well this afternoon. Am I hurting more than helping by putting it close? I just think she will not leave those other 5 eggs?

(newest chick is in the center of the photo and the older chick upper right corner)

Cool! My run with the greenhouse panels is much warmer than the outdoor air if the sun is out.

I think i is fine to put food and water close as long as it doesn't spill in there. But I think I would only be giving them the chick crumble until mom brings them out to dig in the dirt so they pick up some grit to help digest that food? or offer grit? I'm not sure how that goes, I did not have a mama... Some others here will know more as they have broodies...

Oh and make sure the water is kind of shallow so the babies cannot drown in it, but i'm sure you know that...

So cute!!!

Oh, and the chicks can go 48-60 hours without food and water while the other chicks hatch. When they ship chicks they don't have food and water ,

Chick (grower) feed should be complete with a grit for baby gizzards. I gave my broody and chicks chick feed and water day one. She was beep-beeping right away getting the chick excited about the feed crumbles. Although they are not too much into it the first few days ( still living on the yolk sack just tucked into their belly not long before they hatched) but they did seem interested in her excitement and learned from her. I would be sure to keep bedding dry clean tidy to avoid bugs/ pests. If you've got mint popping up throw some sprigs in the nest.
My broody generally would not bring babies out for a week. Was waiting for them to get good advanced agility I suppose . Or maybe it's bred in them to wait in case more eggs hatch...whether there was more or not...? Idk. But she didn't seem ready on both hatches until a week or so had passed. I tried pushing it a couple times and it stressed her out big time. She liked her broody hutch privacy that's for sure.
Oh I miss those days. Enjoy it Siggie. They grow fast. Momma will probably kick them away at 5-6 weeks and start laying again.

You guys make me feel like a bad chicken parent lol! The most I do for broodies is let them out of their cage and they find the babies food and bring them to the stream for water... I dont baby my birds like Jerry and EJB...

Morning . I went to the sale yesterday but did not stay long . Too crowded . I could not get close enough to hear the bids . Yes old man hearing can't pick out words from background talk . Hope Ralphie does better .
