Surviving Minnesota!

We got about an inch overnight and it has just started to snow again now.

That photo posted of someone watching over a harvested corn field for their deer is a sign of an intelligent hunter. Corn fed deer definitely taste better than others.

Ralphie, I must admit that I do like call ducks, but I do not like the conditions required to house and manage them properly.

I believe it is about this time of year that Jerry is sitting back laughing about us fools that make Minnesota a year round place of residence.

for the record...

It will have to be a lot colder in Hades than it is today for me to have a Call Dux or any dux! I think you were duped by some semi-clever photo-shopping...

How can you resist the webs?

Good morning. Saw 10 deer this morning. All within 100 yards but waited because the does were acting off. Not long after all the does and fawns were a deer walked onto the field about 250 yards away. All the does were staring as this deer came with its nose in the snow. It was a really nice buck but he wouldn't stop chasing does and fawns long enough to get a shot.

My mom and sister and brother all saw the same MONSTER buck this morning.

I can understand the actions of the does....I have seen this many times, When I enter a shopping mall or other crowded place, The women all act off and stare at me with "that' Look....

Pretty quiet in the north woods today. Few shots. Fewer close. No fresh tracks in the 2-3inches of overnight snow. I'll switch stands tomorrow. Snow usually moves the deer a little south here. Off to my little stand by the lake in the morning.

Wow, with all those critters to care for you must have a busy schedule ? and then you must take care of the livestock as well.
Welcome aboard.
I'm a stay at home mom. Somehow I get everyone taken care of. Not always easy though! This will be our first winter with so many critters. Last year we just had the LGDs, goats and some chickens, and it wasn't too bad caring for them. This year will pose a bit more of a challenge with double the animals. Will take a lot longer and I will probably end up doing chores in the dark before everyone else is up. Oh well!

Welcome Amber - It was great talking to you for a bit at the show. Don't be a stranger to BYC - Surviving MN.

What types of chickens do you have?
Hi! Thanks! We've got a mush mash of a lot of things. Kind of whatever the kids saw and wanted. Several barnyard mixes were rehomed to us this summer from people who could no longer care for them... a welsummer rooster, two Wilkie roosters, a bunch of red declines that came from an Amish farmer, a couple barred rocks... those are our over 1 year birds. Some I'm not even sure how old they are!
This years birds we have a cream legbar, Mille fleur d'uccle bantams, a couple buff Cochin bantam hens, Easter Eggers, olive Eggers, barnyard mixed, a lavender Orpington hen, black copper Marans, Rhode Island Red, black sexlinks, and then we bought 6 chicks from tractor supply at the end of August- 2 red rangers, 2 cuckoo marans(maybe?) and 2 New Hampshire reds. Phew. Quite the eclectic group we have!
