Surviving Minnesota!

12 layer eggs
1 cochin egg

Finally got my 4H county and state fair award check in. County messed up on some of the things, I let it slide, heck if I can get $36 for a day of doing something I love I'll take it

Yesterday, I went 5 for 5 with buff Orpington eggs. 0 for 2 with RIR, 0 for 2 with buckeyes, 1 for 3 with toads, and 5 for 17 with layers. No Sunday Sabbath rules, just ample light from 6am until 8:30 pm.

Edit for spellcheck....

Do you have lights one your birds?

I do!!!! They don't seem to care, on the Sabbath they refuse to work!

Actually I am finding the ones on the lights do lay more, and eat more than those outside in the cold with no lights. So I can verify EJB's theory on lights and feed.

I put 2 toad hens inside with the evil toad rooster. He treats them well in the cage and I get an egg or two a day from them after less than a week under lights. The out door toads are not laying. When I finish the larger pen inside I am bring another toad in. I will start hatching toads as soon as I can. I might get 2 generations again this year. I sure could use the "next phase" rooster I need...Hint..hint...hint...

Yes, I have a fancy Menards grade timer wired into the lights. It automatically turns on at 6:00am and off at 9:30pm. (Insert THANK YOU SISTER -in LAW) The timer is on the Toads, Buff Orps, and the 4 week old chicks. I see a significant difference in those with the lights and those without.
