Surviving Minnesota!

Good morning all...

Yesterday was a crappy day... Had two calves born early early yesterday morning and one got pushed out under the fence... Baby was ice cold and looked to be dead but he wasn’t.. Got calf inside and got him in a warm bath. Got him warmed up some and dried off and left him in the house while we were dealing with the second calf (couldn’t find the tit... Stupid calf) We ended up bringing the cow that had her calf through the fence into the calving she’d and milked out colostrum for both calves. It still wasn’t looking very hopeful for the one baby... Fed him and he looked a little more perky so I gave him a round of penicillin and we waited and waited. He made what looked to be a small attempt to stand but still, it wasn’t looking promising... Now this morning my grandpa went out to check the cows and the little dude was standing. He got the cow in and got her in the chute and the calf nursed on his own. He still has a little ways to go but he should be fine I think... Two BIG bull calves... The one that couldn’t find the tit on the cow was well over 100lbs and the one that dang near froze was in the 90lbs range? Now we have more cows that look like they could go at anytime...

@holm25 With the weather we have "scheduled" for this weekend, it appears you will have a busy weekend.

Hopefully, it will stay dry for you. Cold they can handle, wet not so much.
We are expecting a few this weekend... Shpuld be interesting... We have a big lean to on the back of the hay shed that has a calf gate so the babies can get in the straw and stay out of the wind and rain. Then we have the calving sheds we can put them in if we have too.. But with the amount of cows we have close and how quick they have been going both sheds may have a momma with a new baby! There are 5-6 cows that are really getting close... A few of which are first timers so we always lock them up with baby just Incase... But we haven’t had any issues..

Just some pics from yesterday...

I’ve got some mixed emotions about this hen... I think she is put together OK but her color needs work... But I am working on type with the Buckeyes first...

What humidity level should the incubator be at? I think I'm going through water too quickly. I have the center trough filled, per instructions, but have already had to fill it twice.

When I borrowed this, I don't see a vent cap. Vent is currently open. Guessing that's where the water is going....

I go dry until day 18...
