Surviving Minnesota!

So funny! I know very little about ducks, but seriously, that title is a terrible thing that ought not to have been wasted. Someone should write that book properly. :lau

Ralphie invited me here, so you know who to blame... :p

We in western SD, central Black Hills are basking in 12 degrees of balminess. I so feel for you guys, but at the moment I’m really glad I’m here not there. My sympathies... collect eggs frequently if you love them.

Stepdaughter in Seattle is whining about 3-5” of snow and 20 degrees. :gigPeople move to the west coast and just go all squishy.

Yes they become water logged.

Welcome CindyinSD. I am Bogtown Chick aka BC. BantyChooks can be BC too just to keep you on your toes.

I am in northern MN. I have a backyard flock of 7 hens. 4 Ameraucana from Jerryse. Welsummer & NH from Minniechickmomma. And a barred rock rescue that came from Duluth named Freya - we are her 4th home and she turns 1 this spring.

I like gardening, mowing, cooking, soap making and knitting. Foraging for mushrooms, too.

Since you are Western SD and not Eastern I assume you do not frequent bars for Chislic...?

Thanks for being so welcoming everyone, and BC! BC, no, no bars for chislik. ;) It’s been a while since I got a deer, too. DH has been sick... we spent 5 months in MN, Rochester... but he’s all better now. Maybe this year. I forgot to apply last year until too late. I have 17 pullets, my first venture into chickendom. There are another oh, 16 I think? Coming in April. Turkeys too... 15. And 4 Buff geese. I guess I caught the bug. Plus three adorable heifers with shaggy hair and rad horns.

So all you detractors... What’s the deal with ducks anyway? I have been reading a book in which the author lauds ducks to the celestial regions and feeling that maybe I ought to order some before they’re all sold out. No? I may have my hands full at this point anyway, but he made them sound so amazing... I have never owned or eaten one or even seen let alone tasted a duck egg. I am feeling like I’m missing out...

:lau I was listening to the Weather Channel and heard the words, “Seattle blanketed by 3 inches of snow”. I looked at the TV and laughed. They can still see their streets! There was grass poking up through the snow. It appeared to be starting to melt. But, when you’re not used to it....

I used to have ducks. They weren't bad but a lot of the times I was sitting there going "You are not worth the work". In the winter they are so messy, if I am to ever get ducks again they will be in there own coop that has a concrete floor right next to a dam. The males tend to get more aggressive than chickens when it comes to breeding. I had a drake rip the outer layer of skin of a duck one time. If you do not have a natural area for them to swim you are constantly having to fill up a large water container of some sort, cleaning it and in the winter you have to have some kind of deeper water source for them I just did a bucket for them so they could at least dunk their heads. I didn't mind their eggs, my dad was horribly allergic to them unless they were in a cake or brownies. And the eggs were hard to sell, people out here did not like them, granted it is a whole different market here in SW north dakota. I had 2 clients, one friend bought them in the spring for Psyakny and the other family had a kid allergic to chicken eggs. One plus is the snow and cold weater don't mind them as much so they will go outside much more in the winter. All in all I didn't mind them that much and I can gurantee I will have some as an adult, I will probably try some geese too.
