Surviving Minnesota!

I made a mistake last night. After coming in from the fireworks last night I didn’t close the back door of the attached garage where the littles still want to go to roost. Sometimes I carry them to the coop. Sometimes I’m too tired for coop training. Well something had major cajones traipsing into my garage and took my barnevelder cockerel. He died defending I’m sure. So little to do a brave thing. I don’t like this screw up on my part. I should have been a better keeper. Little rooster or not...
:hugs:rant
It happens to all of us. :hugs

As Fake Eilleen says it happens to us all, for one reason or another the door does not get closed before dark. I didn’t get back from my spent brewers grain run until almost midnight on the 3rd.. all the way home I worried about the doors.

I got lucky again, but it was the WW’s fault the doors were open she wanted to sample the refined products at the brewery....

Sorry about your boy BC. Do you need another?

We’re all the girls unhurt?

Don’t blame yourself. That’s not fair—stuff just happens. It doesn’t have to be anyone’s fault. Heck, I forget things more often than I remember them. The human brain is finite and fallible and there’s nothing you or I can do to change that. Some folks have a better memory than others, but we all have a limit, influenced by health, fatigue, worries, responsibilities... It’s not like you just blew it off because you were feeling lazy. It’s unjust and unkind to kick yourself over this. Give yourself a break—the same break you’d give anyone else. You totally deserve it. :hugs

:D Thank you for your generosity Ralphie. All set with my hunka chantecler Sentry. He'll be glad the little pesty is gone for sure this fall. But wanted to see the grow out on a Barnevelder rooster who was stunning as an 'awkward' teeny bop. You know in the middle of the night i surfaced out of my deep sleep. I'm sure of it and thought of it. The whole not closing the door thing. And I thought, "I'll be lucky tonight. :fl" And I went back to sleep.:hitI wonder if it was the moment he was grabbed. Gol dang it.

Thank you sweet Cindy. :hugs

:he Still dont like giving foxes free lunchies. DS asked, "wouldn't have you needed to get rid of him anyhow?" LOL. 17 and already cold and calloused. Hahaha. Oh how they grow up.

Time to get the little girls down to the big girl coop now. Garage smells like a farm. For reals.

Good morning all..

Big day in store for me...

I am heading out shortly to the wild frontier. I will be spending the day fighting off highwaymen as I make my way northwest.

I and another brave soul will end up right on the edge of North Dakota, known by many simply as “the land God forgot to finish.”*

We are intending to have young squab for our noon meal.

I will post of our adventures later, if we return alive.

* we will not be entering the lost forgotten lands, we are not that foolish!

:lau I have yet to visit ND except for once briefly cutting the corner by Fargo en route to a cabin in MN, so I refrain from comment. One good thing... when you live somewhere like ND or large swaths of SD, people are a lot more likely to leave-you-the-heck-alone. ;)
We tell people all the time that North Dakota is a terrible place to live, stay away. ;)

Hey folks,

Happy weekend, hope you all had a safe 4th. Been offline for a good long while, came back as it looks like I'm starting over, down to 4 hens. Lost 14 chickens over two days while they were free ranging to something. Never found bodies, just feathers all over. Seven gone one day, a week later another seven.

The irony is I've just hatched out my first go at eggs, so I've got re-inforcements on the way, from the chickens who got eaten.

Debating about getting more chicks now, or just waiting till next year.

RIP Buddy, the nicest Rooster!
