Surviving Minnesota!

Have not been on in a while, but I just caught up on the posts.
I have had a difficult time lately, as I have lost 4 birds to wolves and a bear. The wolves took some while free ranging and the bear broke into the coop at night. The bear had broken into my feed shed several times and over a few days consumed about 100 pounds of black sunflower seeds. Then after they were gone he broke in and smashed the metal garbage cans which I keep feed in as a message that it was not happy there were no more sunflower seeds ? It did not want layer pellets, wheat or Safflower seed.
It then tore the bottom half of the dutch door open on the chicken coop and helped itself to a hen.
At that point I decided to stay up all night and guard the property. Guess what it has not been back since. Too early for hibernation, so I think it is just playing cat and mouse with me.

I wish you well in your endeavors to transform this bear into a good bear.

Glad your back. I was worried about you.

Oh Gosh Ed.
I Have to say the bear numbers are up around here too. Well at least more sightings to me indicate numbers up. On the way home from my parents' place late Saturday I swerved for deer running-in the rut- you know and then as I came around the corner on the highway was a sow and two cubs I think. She was a big beautiful black thing and I saw smaller (maybe second year juveniles) with her. Unreal. I had to swerve to the left lane as she sorta darted toward my Right Quarter Panel. The rest is a black blurr I honked my horn there in the left lane and kept cruising. I hope she knows better next time. I think the next few days later going up there again I saw crows in the trees on that corner. I'm sure she had some meat in the ditch she was trying to get to before I came zooming around the corner. Felt bad I scared her but I guess I didn't hit her so all is well.

What a pain to have a bear in your chicken camp there though. The grain and BOSS are too good for smelling. The acorns are thick on the ground but the deer are crawling onto my deck for chicken feed. So the pain in the butt stuff continues...

Good luck!

Good of you to mention this Trooper Ralphie. I have thought of you several times in recent weeks as I have traveled I35 in my pigeon race activities.
Your fellow Troopers have held personal conversations with many but not with me.

erlibird my intent was to install just enough #7 shot in it's rear to convince this is not a good place to frequent. It seems once a year I have to chase a bear out of my property.
Coyotes are a nuisance but now I have the Great Gray's which have acquired a taste for chicken. One must be cautious in finding a method to eliminate that problem. They seem to be protected with more vigilance than a Bald Eagle ?! I have not had a problem with eagles. Many with hawks though.
