Ralph. Klop and I were just discussing that on another thread. I told him I recommend jerseys if u want small cows. They are sweet and docile and the butcher told me the meat from jersey steers tastes better than from a beef steer. BUT they dont fill out on grain like beef steers do. I love our jersey to pieces but would never get another cow with horns. They tend to bully the cows witg no horns. And they are easily trained to come whem called!

I have a horn clippers here. We use to clip the horns on all our cattle as a kid, I bet the clipper has not been used in 45 years!

Ralphie, I will first say that I have no first hand experience with Dexters, but I would not keep them. They are too small and to me more of a novelty than anything else.
I would much rather suggest that you consider either Scotch Highland or British White. They are not as small, but excess meat from butcher can be sold to friends and family?

I have thought about highlands. However, novelty is ok with me too.

Then again, I may never get any as I am not sure I want to get that tied down. If things go as planned Judy will be retiring in a couple years. I somehow think she would not like cows.


I have also thought of Mini-donkeys a complete and utterly novelty thing to have.

If you are just going to raise a steer or two, you might consider finding one from a milking shorthorn farm? There is variability in temperament within all breeds, but one thing I do know is that the bucking bull breeders in many cases like to have some Jersey in the bloodline due to the nastiness and aggressive nature it adds.

We had a jersey angus cross as a kid. it was the meanest cow you have ever seen. It was the cow that sent me rolling through the gutters more than any other cow. I was not going to say anything to spare Holm's feelings. But now that you mentioned it....

No Jersey for me.
