Welcome!I am a North Dakotan, but someone came on the North Dakota Site and said I could come here and chat with everyone.
I live on a 17 acre farm raising chickens and beekeeping.
Does anyone else have bees and collect honey?
Oh no! If too much didn't break off, it will grow back, if too much broke off, it won't. Did you find the piece? Here is a photo of my cluck-cluck when she broke her top beak, it was not too much, and it did grow back. I watched her eat to make sure she could. I don't remember seeing any pink under her broken beak though, but hers wasn't bad.Okay - I am peeved! If Judy is the wicked witch of the south you can make me the one of the west.
I told you the story of the DH and Tom Hanks having a kick fight while the DH was putting a roost in the new coop. When the DH is parking his vehicle in the driveway if Tom is out and close he will come running and attack. So the DH was telling me that he got home and the roo attacked and he hit him (but not hard) with a stick. I softly said oooh you can't hit him/them in the head at all. Well it was not bad was his response.
The flock is already roosting for the night and so I went in to tuck them in. The black lab walked past the run and Tom told me a little story that he was not happy with the dog. I took a good look at Tom and his upper beek is split! I picked him up and showed it to the DH whose response was that Tom better leave him alone. Ugh! Don't ever hit my roo again and somehow I have to figure out how to work this out. Of course Tom is in pain. His wattles are hot and he looks a little off balanced. He was very easy for me to pick off the roost and carry him around and examine his beek.
What should I do for the broken beek. My comfort is that some beeks are trimmed with a clipper so that birds can't peck at each other so I am sure he will survive but is there something I should do for him?

There is a picture and I think it is on pate 757. Its amazing me just how upset I am about this. I am going out with a flashlight again to check on him.
Can i ask where you live in ND? i am originally from Grenora but have not lived there for many years. I now live in MN. good to see you join this thread..I decided to join this thread since the ND one is super slow! Even though I live closer to Montana..
Are they still for sale? No, it wasn't me.
I think finding an itty bitty acrylic finger nail or silk repair kit for acrylic nails like they mention in that article might be the ticket...? That pink part is the matrix that a new beak will grow from. If it's red and viable/protected I think you'll get a new beak to grow on it eventually. Antibiotic ointment and even the $20 veterycin spray (not a bad investment--lasts forever and very useful in the flock) would help prevent infection and I think keep that area viable. Things happen in a flock Ivie. It's all very humbling. Being a chickeneer. You're not alone.![]()
