Surviving Minnesota!

I am going to make two of those mama heating pad brooders I think... R they cheaper to run compared to the heat lamps??

Thanks Ralphie - I read the interesting information and will be moving forward, cleaning my brooder in anticipation of chicks arrival from your hatchings, getting the mama brooder made and cleaning out all the chickie water and feed apparatus. Excited.

Have come up with some other non-major building ideas also. Like enclosing the compost on three sides on the river bank. Covering it with wire and letting them free range in it. That idea will probably morph as it comes into being. Another one is to section off that front vegetable garden with a movable, framed, wired, run and dump some of the compost into it and let three to four chickens dig my garden up for me in April.

The credit goes to what I read out here and I am confident I can achieve these goals / projects on my own. Getting excited for the weather to warm up!

Yes, and safer.

While safety is a concern the cost of running a 250w heat lamp versus a heating pad is the big thing for me.

As best I can tell it is 60w for the heating pad when it is on high, lower settings are less. It does not say for sure. I looked online for it.

The other thing I like is it gets the birds into a normal day and night cycle instead of 24 hour light.
