Surviving Minnesota!

Of course I would love to see them. Just like baby kitties. Gotta look you know. Maybe this weekend? Are you and Judy around? They are so beautiful.

We will be here Sunday. We have a funeral to attend on Saturday.

Everything I read on SC's problems indicate it will be a month or 6 weeks before she is recovered from it. I am still in awe of what you did with her.

If you other Minnesotans could see the cute little splint and cast she made SC you would be impressed too. We could even put a chicken RX sign outside her place and send all the sick ones there!

This might get me kicked out of the chicken club BUT i hate baby chicks, sorry dont like them, UNLESS they are big enough to make it outside i wont be getting them...the are messy, poopy, smelly little screamy things... i clean their mess and paper at least 5 or more times aday, change poop filled water dishes and im getting tired of squishing my hands, arms in poop... its gross and im done,, these arethe LAST ones.. God Bless you all that can do it...
Coffee, you're entirely too hard on yourself. I can't imagine chicks in my house in the middle of winter. No thank you! When I brood summer is coming on (Middle April) in my GARAGE! and when the chicks are 5 weeks old they are in the coop. We don't do 4-H so we don't need to have any birds ready for a show or anything....we just do it for backyard fun. It is a detailed 5 weeks of depooping water/feed, adjusting heat, changing shavings every 2-3 days. I hear ya. I pretty much put that 5 weeks as blocked out for not going anywhere or vacationing or what have you. It's chick-ville time.

I will share my journey of getting this site to work better . I did a golden feather membership . That helped some . Still was having scrolling problems and typing lag . Started getting a message that shockwave flash plug in was not responding or sometimes it said crashed . So I googled it . Made by adobe . I found out how to turn it off in my laptop . Then I have been using chrome for this site . I noticed a page with the corner turned down before the address for this site . On chrome only . So I clicked on it . Told me how many cookies from this site 36 and like 356 from other sites . I was able to block or turn these off from other sites . So now it seems to be working good . I have 3 browsers now due to chasing these problems . I went from explorer to firefox then to chrome . No problems on other sites but for me chrome is working the best .Firefox I can auto delete browser history but chrome only found incognito mode . In that this site did not recognize me and I had to sign each visit . So I got out of that .
I too ran into the shock wave issues. And after configuring my computer to not deal with that plug-in...I now cannot watch a majority of videos posted on here unless they are you-tube. Love BYC...but it is a HEAVY site to deal with computer wise. Another computer doesn't even want to type a sentence...as it just lags horribly.

I posting this on another thread but will repost here to liven things up. We have been stuck on eggs, hatching, and genetics for quite a bit....

I am jot usually a big tv watcher but last night I was at my inlaws house and my FIL was watching Survivor. I've never watched it even though the spirit of the show intrigues me I just assume it is mostly fake like most reality shows.
The reason I bring it up... 2 of the 3 teams grabbed live chickens off the supply boat at the start, kept them penned up in baskets for several days until they got fires made and promptly ate them.

I don't know how hard it would be for a chicken to free range for food (well perhaps on a leash) on a tropic island but wouldn't it be better to have some eggs every day over 1 day of protein? I know the one team had issues with red ants climbing into their beds so I know there is potential food sources for the birds.

I'm making some assumptions here that the birds are hens and of laying age, but still... What would you do??

We are Survivor Watchers. We always make that comment about the chickens, of course. Ha. We were watching it one year...they butchered the hen and kept the rooster. Total dumb-dumbs.
Good Morning - The sun is shining! The sun is shining! Doesn't it feel like Spring is coming? I know we have a cold spell coming for a couple days next week but so what! I may not even be walking on this earth next week so I think I will enjoy today.

Just wanted to tell you that I think SC has turned the corner. It came yesterday and is persisting into today. She is awake more; she is flocking with the roos everytime I check on her (or they are with her - the roos are definitely hanging around her more); She is pecking at the chickie feed on her own more. I am making sure she gets her water and vitamins and that is about all. She is flapping her wings alot more and I let her because I just think she will get stronger. At this time I doubt that I will be able to put her in a run with other birds other than her flock mates and two roos would be too much with one hen. Ahhhh, I will cross that bridge when I come to it.

Have a great day! Mine will be busy.
Great work Ivie. Give us a little photo once in a while. Hope it keeps going smoothly for SC.

The camera dome is kinda dusty, but you can still make them out.

i use pine shavings. these chickens basically tramp it down. I started out with about 4 inches. Everyday i just go into their brooder and mix it around. But now at 4 weeks (today) i had to add some new pine shavings. By the time i get done and get these chicks outside I will have about 8 inches of pine in there. I will take it outside and make me up some compost. They do not have a problem pooping all over but soon enough they will be outside pooping and doing my yard good. And my garden. These little hens will have to work for their food. ha. I made a square out of 2,x 4's about 14 inches (square). I put hardware cloth over that. I put their food bowl on top of it and a bowl underneath to catch the food they constantly drop out of the feeder. They drag pine shavings up but i just take that bowl of food and put it right back into their feeder. I took chicken nipples and put them on some pvc and keep that filled. No poopy water. So for the most part thats what i do.
