Surviving Minnesota!

good morning all! just getting some coffee in me before I go out and get some work done. It is my friday off so I am going to be scooping poo and I also hope to have a wagon load of corn procured by the end of the day from my neighbor.

I got that old 100 bushel wagon that I bought. The neighbor wants me to drag it to town and weigh it, then he will fill it and then i have to head back and weigh it again. that is 40+ miles

I am hoping i can get him to 'eyeball' it and call it good because otherwise I am going to be put put putting with my smv sign on for hours today!

I love it!!!

I thought I was the only one that had PITA's! Could you send me a dozen of those eggs? I want to check them for variation and see how they fit into my egg cartons. Please package them really well. I want to check the air sacs to see what they look like also...
This is why I like auctions . I can stop abruptly when I get fed up with people . I do spot some of them before a sale and avoid them . I have a short list of red flags . 4h is bad they expect show winners for the kids . Preachers are fishers of men and expect too much . If I can spot a chronic whiner I avoid them .

We r still patiently waiting for Ms. Clementine to calf... She is going to calf on Sunday when the barometric pressure drops is our new guess...

Hi, folks! I'm back in the Backyard - just found out there is a second MN thread.

Ralphie - As I was going through my summer, fall, and most of the winter, I've been thinking about Bert and wondering how long he made it. I spent three weeks trying to catch up on MN BYC happenings and found I still had like 300 pages to go or some such number. I did see when he passed & just wanted to say I was always glad for the life you gave him and enjoyed his antics so much. I understand there are little Berts? Are they still doing okay?

Hey, Holm - hope everything goes well when your girl calfs. Is this her first time?

Jerry, my prize EE rooster was found in the stock tank a couple months ago. Man, he was pretty. Good temperament, too. Explain to me your autosexing EE chicks. I had not heard of that with EEs. I am not sure if I will get a roo to replace him or just raise up some stock, and hatching is a lot of fun. I know exactly what to do with excess roos.

Are your roos pretty nice? There is a mutual respect thing going on between our roos and the rest of the family. Anything really flighty or aggressive in your line?

Well, just wanted to say hello again to everybody. Had a pretty interesting year. Added rabbits and ram lambs to my repertoire. Hatched out some olive egger type chickens. Had a (lost) guinea hen pop out of nowhere with some keets!! That was a real treat! Plus the new little guy - he's all dimples and a real sweetheart. Made some adjustments to my coop with the help of DH and DS. I think we have finally conquered frostbite around here, but I won't know for sure until or unless I have a single-comb type spend it's first winter in there. I'll post some photos and things as I can.

It seemed like I had more coyotes than normal this past summer and fall. How were they in your areas?? I'm by the St. Croix valley, a little north of the metro.

Dandlioness we got her and 7 other cows from a guy who git them from an auction so we dont know how many calves she has had. This for sure wont be her first calf. We should get 25 calves this year from 25 cows. Two are open... Unless anyone has twins but I doubt they will.

Barring is the secret to auto sexing . You need barred hens and a rooster with 2 barring genes . These sex just like Legbars which are part of the mix . I had already started my own but added Legbar because I needed a double barred rooster last year . My rooster was single barred last year . So this year I have a rooster with 2 barring genes that is half Legbar .

Morning vent/rant . I have a person wanting eggs on BYC . I notified here that I was going to offer some of the auto sexing EE . She wants minty green layers and she can not have roosters .She wants to rehome the male chicks . She now wants me to send a couple of eggs so she can decide if the color suits her .

Time to be a bellybutton I guess . Ever year I get at least 1 PITA . Not good when it is the first potental sale .

You always have a place here to Vent Jerry.

Away. It also is a reminder of how NOT to act to the rest of us. LOL. Education is a good thing. Hahaha. When you bring me eggs or chicks...I'll just be looking for some hue that resembles a blue.

..or the exact turquoise of a tropical caribbean reef.

Welcome back Dandelioness. How's the baby? Right? You had a baby...I can remember right...right? No wonder you've been away. Ton of other projects, too. I'm glad you found us!

I'm Down to 7 birds. I have to take a double take and recount everytime I go down there to let them out.
Sure is easier on feed. I have to say. Come spring I'll be buying a bag of feed for 3 months...if I keep numbers this way. Tempting....but ....nah.

Holm I'm loving the Cow Face. Perfect picture.

Ralphie you are generous as ever about the Flip Flop wearing Coop Cleaning Class day. As you say...I might hurt myself with a shovel with one of your Mike's HARD lemonades. Or slip on a slippery poo pile. It was nice...this morning up here in Artic Tundra country: I did a mini scooping session in the coop and everything was nice poop-cicles. No muss-no fuss.

So they built a chicken coop on "Ask This Old House" for a lady in Connecticut. it was an ok coop, but very small, and then they put 6 nest boxes in there for a coop that can maybe hold 3 chickens. didn't see a roost either. Then, they built a really nice pen, but used chicken wire instead of hardware cloth. not gonna keep anything out of there... they should have done some research on this site first,
