Surviving Minnesota!

I am going to change some things Jerry.

I think it was my fault I put two hatches together the other day. I think having the bigger ones in there was my problem. I am going to set up my massive CX pens and move the chicks in there at a couple weeks. or so. The pen in 6x12 so they should not pile up as badly.

I have two tanks set up in the shed, no corners for them to pile into. I think I will rotate the birds out of the tanks and into the larger pen a little faster. With a few weeks on them they should be able to with stand their own stupidity better.

I know the people on the CLB's talk about what great birds they are, and I do like the looks, the eggs and all, but they are flighty. Mine are almost as flighty as Keets are.

I should be cutting back on incubating too, I was the only add on the local craigslist now there are dozens of ads for chicks, some are as low as a buck a piece. I have found some interesting ads for interesting mixes. I need to add a few EE and I want more PC and SS so those I will continue I guess and just keep the ones I need and eat the rest.

I also want White sports so I suppose that means I keep hatching CLB's and plan on eating lots of skinny little roosters this year instead of CX's. Besides I need to hatch out some White sports for you. I am thinking of moving the white sports sooner also so they are not in a position where they can get trampled.

I will be switching the majority of hatches to turkeys soon. As I have 2 of the Toms I am using in breeding pens with hens. I have 4 other hens locked up in a Bordello awaiting the arrival of Holm's Mr T.

I still haven't gotten myself to process it correctly when you call a BA an Aussie

I always have to think twice

Lol Thats what we call them on the breeding for production thread and I guess thats what I have started calling them

Hi All,

I just found this Minnesota topic! I live in Isanti.

We just got 12 adult (1 year old) laying hens and 1 rooster a week ago. Averaging 9 eggs a day. Never had chickens before so I have a lot to learn!

I'm interested in maybe getting some cornish cross meat birds as chicks. I understand they go out in the chicken tractor at about 3 weeks.

I'm curious with our climate about when I would want to have the chicks delivered so that at 3 weeks of age the outside temps would be okay for them?

Thanks!

In cattle , goats and horses they often upgrade or breed up from grade stock . Lots of Hereford cattle in the west trace back to a Longhorn momma . I have used this method a lot in chickens . So recessive white Legbar is not hard to make .The Legbar over white Ameraucana would work in a few generations and breed true to Legbar type . So not a big deal for me .

So can I ask what you charge for Legbar chicks ?

Welcome!

I am a bit south from you and last year I got my chicks the second week of May. They were able to move outside at 3 weeks old just fine with a heat lamp in the tractor at night.
It was pretty cool at night yet

Murphys law has struck again..

I went to add feed to my CLB's in the cage in the dining room, for some reason they have turned Flighty. like CLB's do. They stampeded and killed my littlest white sport.

So I am down to one white sport now... It is so disappointing.

Ohhhh my heart breaks. That poor lil bird! I am so sorry this happened.
