Surviving Minnesota!

Yeah . Crazy site would not let backspace all junk out so I just posted it all .

Once you paste it, try cutting it instead of backspacing, that sometimes works.

I moved the one set of nests out of the coop getting ready for my remodel on it. It was on the south wall in the front of the coop. the other set of nests are on the back wall. They liked the front ones and only 2 of the 8 boxes ever got used.

This morning I went to check on them and there were 3 hens standing in front of where the nest boxes were looking up and then at me they had the " what the He double hockey sticks happened to our nests looks on their faces.

I think I may have to put that box back and take the other one down.

And this is my moms cute little heifer.

ETA: dont mind his goofed up ear tag. My grandpa handed me the tagger and pill pumper and said well u better tag your calf and I think I got it a tiny bit high. Its good to know he has that much corage in me.

In SW North Dakota we have nighthawks, golden eagles, bald eagles, chicken hawk, etc. Just to name a few. Our, Great Pyrenees(1/2), border collie(1/4) Australian Shepard(1/4) cross does a very good job of keeping any predator away. Including the mountain lion in our area.

The dogs help a lot for sure.
So it's possible they could have been Golden Eagles. I will have to Google the difference between Golden Eagles & juvenile Bald Eagles.

Oh, the chicks under the hen are hatching.  I think there will only be two, if I remember my candling right.  I left 4 eggs under her, but thought only 2 were viable... I think, maybe it was 3.   Anyway, I have one chick out, and one pipped.   The chick that is out looks fine, but has little bald spots on each side of his head.   :idunno

I have always separated hens with their chicks from the rest of the flock. Anyone ever leave them with the flock?  Successful, or not?  I'd feel so bad if the other chickens killed the chicks, but haven't decided what I am going to do with them.  (Right now she is in a dog kennel, but the slats are too big for chicks.)   I might just have to throw together something tomorrow for her.

I will add that a broody hen I separate, but once they've all hatched I let them reintegrate. Mama hen will handle it, as others have said! I do feed her & chicks starter or grower for a while, just so she gets back into condition.

Those are way too expensive. All the NPIP program requires is a band with a number on it. I got mine from Strombergs. I got zip ties in 4 different colors and numbers from 1-50 or 1-25. If We list it on the test records as R 22 we know that is red 22. Or Y 13. All they want is to be able to identify that bird incase it comes in contact with some bad bug.
