Surviving Minnesota!

I opened the Broody coop today. Pew. I do believe there is a level of broody hormones that creates the 'lock-down' hen. And when you make a hen set long without eggs then give her some late in the game-- well you get broody poo clean up longer than a person likes. I at this point remove the native grass wreath and just go with shavings in the nest box for easier 'lockdown poop' clean up. Will have to add more shavings and pluck more grass shoots for eating for her if she's getting up less.

Ivie: sometimes the roosters can just tell who's up for a fight. Lol. DH doesn't really snuggle Roger. But the have agreed to disagree I guess. And steer clear of each other or pay no mind to each other more like.

Morning . I had to open the incubator . Just could not wait until evening . Good hatch so far . One more white Legbar . I was premature on declaring my second Legbar rooster a carrier of white . No whites in this hatch . So I guess last weeks whites were pure Ameraucana . There were only 3 and all white . Got a few hatch this week and no whites . Think I will graft some of these to a broody .

Shipped 2 orders of eggs yesterday out of the cuckoo / lav cuckoo . Legbar and auto sexing EE not selling this week . Thinking of switching back to the Legbar x brown Leghorn rooster and selling super blue egg layers . Auto sexing eggs are not the hit I thought they would be . If I hatch and sell chicks then I have extra cockerels to deal with . EE pullets will not sell very high . They can get sexed EE at the farm store .

It has to be hard guessing what people want in chickens. I'm sure it really changes depending who you talk to. Some people care about SOP, some want colored eggs, some want eye candy, so on and so on!

For all of you donating to the Kindergarten Classroom Projects - I guarantee you are getting a free pass to the Pearly Gates. When my son did this project only 3 years ago......the kids kept a writing journal, they had a count down chain, they estimated hatch rates, and estimated chick colors. You were educators beyond farm life education. So in the eyes of many parents you get a free pass to heaven.

They also asked if I was willing to come in to the classroom and talk about chickens. Of course I will never pass up a chance to talk about chickens :) we will see how it goes and see exactly what they want to learn. I'm hoping it works out so that this can be more than the kids getting to see eggs sit in the incubator and then hatch to see some cute chicks. I have no idea what the experience level is for the lead teacher in regards to chickens but I would assume closer to none than the other way.

Thank you MNChickMom. Although I like the Pearly Gate scenario there is a bit of selfishness involved.

There will be a few fuzzballs from that gorgeous hatch coming to Bogtown's stompin' grounds.

I'm still a bit giddy about seeing that Welsummer bouncing around in that egg. The NH/BLRW egg was a bit porous I noted as well. We'll give that one more time...see what happens. Or see what Dixie does with it. She's pretty good at kicking out the "egg soup" eggs. Last time she brooded I kept tucking them back under her. She'd take them in for a few more days and then kick them out again. I finally did egg-topsies on them and she was right of course. Egg yolk soup.

Jerryse those lavender cuckoos just sound amazing and look amazing by your avatar as well. Do you have some hen pics as well?
