Surviving Minnesota!

EJB, I found a PC rooster/cockerel you might like. I did not notice I had him until this morning. He was standing next to Ed in the pen and I thought he looked mighty fine!

He was not really into posing so the pictures are lacking. He was highly agitated so his tail is a little higher than when he was standing relaxed. When he fills out he should be great.

I can bring him on my next trip north.

I hope the gout has relented and let you be more pain free....

Ralphie, that guy looks like he will do the trick. Whenever you travel up this way let me know.

The Gout is better, but I had hoped it would subside completely by now. The 30 oz porterhouse at the Seven Fires Grill on Friday may not help, and I will have steak for dinner again this evening. Raspberry pie for desert may add to the acid level? I guess I may be a masochist?

My PC is broody again

Thanks everyone! I have the birds quarantined right now and will wait a week or two before returning anyone back to the flock. My trio is going right back into cages but my sisters are going back with the flock. My sisters trio also decided to start laying while at the fair and have laid everyday since! Their pullet eggs are quite big actually! Minnie lots of people complimented these birds! You raise some truly gorgeous birds!!

Also I am trying to find another breed to get into. Any ideas? I really like the Sumatras but havent made my final decision.

Holm, as relates to the Sumatras I think it is more important with this breed what your source of stock is than it is with many breeds. Cold tolerance I think is an issue of concern, so if you can find birds from a breeder in a climate similar to yours it would probably work out best.
Some people have found the birds do not do well in cold winter conditions? The large tail although good looking to many presents problems for showing, as the long feathers are more likely to be damaged?

We had a fox run out of the yard tonight. Saw it cross the drive as I drove out to get my kids from work. Crap.

When I got back I got the pop door off of shavings and further down it's slot. Closed up other doors to the run. I even shut one of the windows. Just leaving one window open. Screen and hardware cloth on that window.

This evening was mojito and chicken tv evening.

The yellow lab took a run at the silkie tonight. I screamed and she backed right off. She has been so good and now this. Poor Dixie. I don't know if she'll do that again... But she knows I was not pleased.

Wherever did you get such a handsome boy? ;) LOL

Some animal has been knocking down the chicken wire fences at night when I leave the chicken food out. Since I have been bringing it in the fences haven't been getting knocked over. I was going to trap the animal but what if it's a skunk?!
We have trapped a few skunks here, and we have shot them in the trap because they tend to sleep during the day. We have used poison in the bait, but not since we have other critters we don't want to get poisoned too. I shoot through the heart since the brain is where the rabies virus is harbored in them if they are infected.

You make a good point. The rabies virus can be transmitted by the blood too so be careful when handling them. Not that I know anyone that handles them. Latex gloves is not a bad Idea. if you do shoot one in the trap leave the trap lie in the sun for a few days so the UV rays kill the virus...

Excuse me? YOU did most of the work to get them into condition, kiddo, so that means YOU raised them. The credit goes to you more than I for them looking so good at the show. I am just glad I was able to get you some that would do well for you.
