Surviving Minnesota!

Lake Vermilion Camping was good to us. We caught up with another branch of DH's relatics. "bullhead" fishing wasn't as good as last year but it was still mighty good. We fed camp the last night. FIL's beer batter is so good. Very tasty. It's not heavy...just light. then you add the right amount of salt to the newly crisped fish. Wowser. Saturday while every body fished I went exploring up to Kawishiwi and Ely. I hiked in the back way to the falls. Gorgeous.

And then ...i thought it foolish to think they were still there...but I thought. Steaks were on the menu that night...May as well check. And like little angels sitting there waiting for me while fools walked by. There sat the Chanterelles I'd seen in the same spot 3 weeks before! I couldn't get over it! There were baby buttons there too. One Lady walked by while I was photographing and before I picked. "Oh do you know mushrooms?" I said, "Mmmm...a little." Trying to be aloof of the mushroom gold I'd found. She rounded the corner and I started plucking them up!

DH and I drink Coors light...but we do enjoy the Blueberry blonde from the Boathouse Brew Pub. So I had to pick up a couple growlers for our weekend.

And here the chanterelles are featured with a nice bullhead.

I know Holm. But it doesn't hurt to talk in 'ralphie' code sometimes. LOL.

Rhetts, I don't know who the contact at NERC is for bird processing. I think if you call the main number they will connect you with the right person?

Jerry, sorry to read of your predator problems. I am currently dealing with the annual hawk migration, and the Goshawks have my chickens and pigeons terrorized. The bigger problem is that if they identify a reliable food source they will remain for the winter. I must build a Swedish Hawk Trap and move them on I guess.

After last night, I am currently looking for a source of premium wild rice seed.

Ejb do you keep the birds locked up during hawk migration, how long does their migration last? where to get a Swedish Hawk trap ?

@holm25 I have a nice batch of blue egg cockerels that are beautiful and have pea combs!

And a couple of single combs too ;)

I have one like this last one but with a rosecomb, he is beautiful!!!

I have some of those too!! LOTS. and some have muffs, tufts and are "interesting looking"..... I hate that all the really beautiful ones are boys.

and I am closer than Minnie!!! I have super interest free financing available too...

Morning all, (there was no rush to say Hi, today, as I saw EJB and Erli were already on here)

erlibird, I do not let the birds out without an armed guard. The hawk migration will last a month or longer, as I am near the W tip of Lake Superior. Those things get funneled right in my direction, as they don't wish to fly over the lake. 80,000 to 100,000 during the migration.

You can buy a Swedish Hawk Trap. Just type the words in your browser and info will come up.

That looks like a bullhead to me! And Those look like toadstools also..

Some of the best tasting toadstools.

Holm This is puffball season. I have a lots here. I am not picking them right now as I am eating my "chicken of the woods" One chicken is a lot to eat and I have a jar full dried for winter seasoning.

When you are POSITVE on the id and get brave enough to eat the puffballs you will be in for a treat, as good as the chanterelles and chicken are the puffballs are better tasting. It is hard to believe a lowly puffball can taste so magnificent'. (See I said that with a French accent)

Whew so many late night posts to get through before I could say the proper:

Good Morning.

Looking at the time stamps, I think I could have won this morning had I not taken time to brew myself some nectar of the gods. However, when I sip said nectar, I know it was worth throwing the match to EJB for the it.

I got rid of my late season accidental hatch guineas last night. I called the female version of Holm's that lives near Monticello. She was going to sneak them under a Cerami (sp) that has been sitting on fake eggs for 4 weeks. Hopefully they will take to each other. One had died before she got here, so she has two "chicks" for her hen.

The poor thing will have a mental breakdown before it gets rid of those keets. When they get larger than her it should be interesting to see if they follow her or murder her. Guineas can go either way.

I am thinking I should arrange a marriage between her and Holm, I would never run out of a place to get rid of my excess birds if that happened.

It appears the "monsoon" season has returned here to the Banana belt. I am going to work in the brooder shed cleaning and throwing things. I also am going to built some smaller cages that I can set into my truck and trailer for hauling birds to sale in.

I will be taking some to Hutch on the 17th, I hope. I was thinking about this weekend in Battle Lake but I have that funeral to attend.

Time to stop typing, I need more nectar.
