Surviving Minnesota!

Morning all!

I'm jealous of all your sweet SS talk...

I was thinking of you yesterday when I was in the shed with the birds. I would walk over to the SS roosters and they came right to the door. I reach in and they enjoy being petted and held, and I thought how can Kloppers not love these birds?

Of course, then I would go to the Dom's and think I should just eat these little anterior sphincter muscles.

Not all of mine are mean but they are all overly very friendly with the ladies but I think that has more to do with competition than anything.

I had that problem with the CLB's. I have not had that problem with the SS. We all need to cull this time of the year so I would take out the overly amorous ones too.

I need to cull some SS roosters and I like them so much both personality and body type and looks. It is hard for me to find one for Jerry because they are all so good. I am amazed at their size they fill out extremely fast for a dual breed.

They're finally taking out the pieces that broke basically a month ago. Hopefully they will finally get this project done after almost 2 months...

We hung the doors last night. Today my dad is going to put stoppers in and blocks beneath them to keep them from sagging

You're going to need to grease up that comb and wattles this Winter!
I've got my goop ready. Bag Balm. There's a part of me that wants to just let it happen this winter and be done with it. But I'll do my best by him and be diligent with Bag Balm.

Also I got another cousin yesterday around 6 o clock last night! Her name is Larkyn, which I'm not a fan of the name, but whatever. I wanted Afton
I have a neice that is Afton.

Okay I went on the new wintering chickens thread. I feel like they are so confusing for new people. I put in my two cents on taking advice from people who live in different parts of the states and have different climates. Hopefully people will absorb that part and pick and piece out what is appropriate for them.

If my SS roosters do "okay" in Hutch, I am going to try and save their combs. I would like to be able to display a "group" next year. But I know the chances are slim they will make the winter unscathed.

Ralphie: For comb saving you may have to insulate and heat a coop special for those birdies. Bag balm helps. But sometimes it's like putting peanut butter on a sore I feel and hard to keep up with....?

As far as ss roosters liking the ladies....my father in law received a ss rooster from ralphies stock. They were hatched April 7th and he waits for the ladies to squat before he even takes interest in them. The 2 ss roosters I had were constantly after the ladies, then we separated them from the hens and they got along just fine. No my barred rock rooster is destined to be a father many times over. My husbands uncle really wants this barred rock as we have him human trained with kids.and I really want one of ralphies ss roosters....so we maybe doing some hen house stirring soon.
