Surviving Minnesota!

Morning from Longville . BRR cool out there . Found a spent chicken of the woods . Lots of unidentified shrooms . Brought 2 wicked witches along . Hereafter referred to as WW . They are staying at the motel as our guest WW is too gimpy to sleep in the camper and does not want to be alone at night . So me and sammy my dog are staying in the camper . Lots to do today but first the WW s must get groceries . Maybe I can get back by lunch .

Welcome back to MN!!!

You should just move here..

This morning as I was leaving the coop I heard what sounded like a young cockerel learning to crow coming from inside the coop. At first I thought it was my young rooster Huckleberry but him and my only other rooster Pumpkin were both outside.
So I went in the coop to see who it was and it was my white Cochin bantam hen Marshmallow! After she crowed she sneezed once or twice then kept crowing.

I've had a hen crow before, I thought she was turning into a rooster but she never did. Not sure why they do this?

I got it on video.
Clearly, she has daddy issues. She is an over-achiever in search for her father's validation that she is worthy and as valuable as her brothers, therefore, she is trying to prove it by doing what the boys do.

Some of you know how I am about winning at stupid things like games and contests...

SO......

I need your help to win a BYC contest..

go to

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...st-09-20-2016-pic-by-memphis/60#post_17579404

and click on like. I know this is another shameless tactic, but hey, I am not above it...

Or don't do it and let me brood for weeks on end causing Saint Judy needless misery...
I gave you a thumbs up, but I had to add one of my own, just for fun. I don't really care about winning. Someone else took the one I thought of posting first, "The stuffing goes where?!?!?!"
LOL

I won a contest once on here when it it still only had a few thousand people. I guessed closest to the day and time when it would hit like 10,000 members or something like that. I got a free Gold Feather Membership for 6 months.

She has no brothers, she doesn't have sisters either. She has had babies.

Psst...I was just kidding.

Yes, hens will start crowing sometimes but rarely. Sometimes it is in the absence of a rooster, sometimes their hormones have flipped and they start producing too much testosterone and they take on characteristics of a rooster along with the crowing. Some bantam breeds will do this more than others. The only crowing hen I had was a little Buff Sebright that was about a year old. I heard someone crowing in the cages where I had kept the bantams over winter and came around the corner to find it was my little hen. Not doubt it was a "she" because she laid me an egg every day. They were cute little birds. I had hatched from shipped eggs, but only got 2 pullets, so they went away to someone for fun birds for the backyard.
I sold some pullets to a guy one year and the next Spring he called me to say he thought he must have gotten a rooster from me after all because someone was crowing every morning. I had him send me pictures. There were clearly 5 hens, however, one had no feathers missing and the others were all treaded up like a rooster had been breeding them. I told him, the one that looks so nice is pretending that she is a rooster and even mounting the others. She was a gorgeous Blue Orpington. The next day he went out to spy on them, and sure enough, she was doing the crowing, but she also was giving him an egg almost every day. I am sure when hens do that they confuse the neighbors if they are in-town dwellers. I would love to see the looks on an anti-chicken person's face if their neighbor had a crowing hen.

I know :p

That reminds me she did mount one of my hens two years ago. She doesn't do it anymore. I want her to like my Cochin rooster Huckleberry so I can have purebred babies in the spring but she just picks on him and won't let him mate her.

She likes my brahma rooster pumpkin though.

Thanks..

I have to admit I like the stuffing goes where~!!!

I won the article contest once and came in second. I had already paid for the golden feather, and just keep paying it to not see all the ads and make the site load faster, so I gave mine to a kid that lives way up in the hinterlands, I knew he was having loading issues...
